Martin Luther
Saint or Sinner?
LUTHER AS A SAINT
Translation of The Bible
Because Luther did this, more and more people were able to read the Bible. Even if the Church didn't agree with him doing this, it may have helped them in the end. The main language that he translated it to was German.
The 95 Theses
When he wrote this, people thought the Church was almighty and believed that everything they did was right.
The 95 Theses showed the people the flaws of what the Church was doing. When he was summoned by Pope Leo X, he was asked if he wold recant anything and he responds with "I will not recant anything". This shows that people do not have to agree with what the Church or the Pope do. It showed people can have a voice.
Lutheran Church
Once he returned to Wittenburg in 1522, he developed a doctrine named the "Two Kingdoms". This started the beginning of the Lutheran Church. He preached things that he believed in, including that political authorities had no business in a spiritual kingdom of one's conscience. Him developing this Church, he let people who believed in him and not the Church leave. This lets people have a say in what they believe in.
LUTHER AS A SINNER
The 95 Theses
Even thought the 95 Theses helped show he was a saint, it also showed he was a sinner to the people of the Church. The people who believe in the Church did not agree with what he was saying. Pope Leo X called for the Edict of Worms to ask if he recanted what he said because the leaders/higher-ups of the Church thought that what he was saying was untrue and completely false. He said that he would not recant what he said, and this outraged the Church. They and the people of the Church believed that they were okay and what they were doing was right.
Anti- Semitism
Luther believed that all children should be baptized. The Anabaptist's on the other hand thought No. This infuriated him. He was mad that people like John Calvin would deny his beliefs. He attacked Jews that would not convert to Christian. His writings helped spread anti-Semitism.
The Split of Lutheranism
Luther assumed that reading scriptures would decide all matters of faith in a persons life. Other Protestants read the Bible differently then he did, so this made him mad. This shows that he does not like when people deny him. All of this caused Lutheranism to split into different Protestant Churches.
