October 7th Fire Safety WeekThe Principal's Corner
It is late September and autumn is quickly making its presence felt as temperatures begin to cool down in the Columbus area. It is also a time to begin to focus on the promise of learning and get to the business of growing the skills of our students at Inspire Elementary.
This week we have completed most of the diagnostic assessments of our students and have been able to assess them both academically and social-emotionally to determine the best routes to accelerate their learning. However, we still need our parents insight to help us understand much about your students. It is time to schedule individual meetings with our parents and teachers to discuss growth plans for this year.
These plans are important to help us develop a comprehensive understanding of each family's learning expectations so that we may blend our academic and social-emotional benchmarks into engaging goals and objectives that include arts, languages, technology, and acceleration.
Please look for our parent survey to complete prior to scheduling a goal conference for your students. We will schedule by family and have our team available for your convenience. Conferences can be scheduled any evening from October 1 until October 15th by contacting our office at 614-505-5718.
Additionally, Chromebooks and Extended Learning service agreement stipend/forms will be available to get a jumpstart on our beyond the school day experience.
What's Going on in the Classroom
Kindergarten – Ms. Pashnik
In kindergarten, we are busy learning new skills! In ELA, we are naming and writing letters, rhyming, and making sentences with words we know. In science, we have enjoyed asking questions and making observations of our ant farm. Our math skills have also improved as we have practiced counting, and learning math terminology such as greater than, less than, and equal. We are excited for the rest of the year!
Kindergarten – Ms. Corcoran
Kindergarten is focusing on learning the letter names, comparing two groups and writing numbers one through five. We have also been working on independence through daily routines and name writing. Kindergarten had some Columbus Police Officers come to visit our classroom and answer questions from our students and explain what they do to protect us every day. We often visit the park nearby to help us connect to the idea of community.
First Grade – Ms. Conerby
This week in first grade, we have been working hard on writing. Since it was the first week of fall, we wrote about our favorite fall activities, favorite fall foods, and more! In math, we have been focusing on using different strategies to solve addition problems. We have also started a science unit and have talked about what it means to "think like scientist" by asking questions and observing the world around us!
Second Grade – Ms. Whiteside
This week in reading, we focused on key details in a nonfiction text. In our math unit, we are focusing on subtraction. We have also started a new science unit on forces. We have had a great week of learning!
Third Grade – Mrs. Chisholm
The 3rd graders were busy beavers this week as they explored metaphors, questioning, and cause/effect. They also learned about some famous inventors by reading biographies. Finally, they closed out their week by concluding chapter 1 in math class.
Fourth/Fifth Grade – Ms. Fulk
In 4th and 5th grade, we have been creating our own personal timelines as we begin studying dates, decades, centuries, and timelines. Each student worked on collecting important dates to them, labeling their dates and events, and organizing them in order!! We have had so much fun learning about one another through our personal timelines!
Mrs. Dunagan
In our social-emotional learning this week, students were learning about their brains. They learned about their "downstairs brain" (amygdala and brain stem) or feeling brain and their "upstairs brain" (cerebral cortex) or thinking brain. Students used videos, picture books, and coloring to discover how these two parts of the brain struggle to communicate when they are upset, frustrated, or sad. Next week, students will be learning strategies to use after they "flip their lids" to help their brain calm down so they can problem-solve.
Yoga – Ms. Snode
In Yoga class, we've been working on "What Yoga is all about....taking good care of yourself...body, mind, and spirit!' We're learning to share space with each other as we move about on our mats. We're exploring our feelings and where we feel them in our bodies, then learning yoga postures and breaths to soothe any undesirable feelings. We're also understanding that people have different feelings about different things. Lately, we've focused on the feeling of "afraid and nervous" and what to do about it through yoga techniques to feel more empowered.
