SENIOR UPDATE

Senior seminars took place in September, all college-bound seniors should actively be working to complete their college applications. Any student that has questions or needs assistance can reach out to their guidance counselor at anytime. Seniors should also refer to the College Application Checklist that is also available on the Guidance Google Classroom.

FINANCIAL AID WEBINAR

A Financial Aid Webinar will take place on Thursday, October 13, 2022 at 6:30 PM hosted by Jodi Conway. The webinar will cover the financial aid application process, including a discussion of the FAFSA and CSS Profile applications and tips to successfully guide you through the entire process. Financial aid expert, Jodi Conway will show you how to create a timeline to meet your college's financial aid deadlines and discuss student loan debt, the different types of aid you might see on your award letters, merit aid, and how/when to appeal an award. Jodi Conway has worked in the financial aid profession for over 36 years, both in college financial aid offices and with her business, Conway College Aid. It is her mission to share this information with families to educate them about the complicated financial aid process.

UNION & TRADE PROFESSIONS

Any student that is interested in joining a union or looking into a trade as a post-secondary planning option, should view The Building Guide to Becoming a Union Building Trade Apprentice The directory provides a great deal of helpful information regarding various careers including: Construction, Electrical Workers, Iron Workers, Plumbers and Pipefitters and many more.

COLLEGE ESSAY WORKSHOP

On October 6th a College Essay Workshop will take place after school in the PHS library. Any senior that would like feedback on their essay should attend. Various PHS teachers, administrators and guidance counselors will be available to read and provide feedback to student essays.

FINANCIAL AID - FAFSA

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opens every year on Oct. 1st. It is the gateway to more than $150 billion in college grants, work-study funds, and federal student loans, as well as certain state-based aid.


The article linked here explains the top 5 reasons to complete the FAFSA, and remember, FAFSA is first come, first serve so consider completing your application as soon as possible!

FAFSA ASSISTANCE / MEFA

If you need assistance completing the FAFSA, free supportive is available through the Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority (MEFA). A financial aid expert can schedule a 1-1 meeting during the MEFA FAFSA Festival on October 25th between 4:00 and 8:00 PM.


MEFA will also host several FAFSA DAY events to provide free support and to answer questions. The dates/times are as follows:


Monday, November 14th 6:00 - 8:00 PM

Thursday, December 15th 6:00 - 8:00 PM

Sunday, January 22nd 2:00 - 4:00 PM

Monday, February 20th 6:00 - 8:00 PM

CSS PROFILE

Many private colleges and universities require the CSS Profile which is an online application used by colleges and scholarship programs to award institutional (non federal) aid. For a list of colleges that require the CSS Profile please click here. Most students complete the application in their senior year of high school starting on October 1. Schools may have different deadlines, be sure to check with each school you are applying to.

PSAT/NMSQT

The PSAT/NMSQT will be administered to Juniors and Sophomores on Wednesday, October 12th and will begin promptly at 7:30 am. All testing information including room locations have been sent to student emails. The PSAT is adminstered to help students prepare to take the SAT. Juniors that take the PSAT/NMSQT can qualify for scholarships and the National Merit Scholarship Program.


Guidance counselors will review PSAT scores with sophomores and Juniors in Guidance Seminars in January and students are encouraged to create a Collegeboard account to view their scores prior to the seminars. Students that are collegebound are encouraged to take the SAT in the spring of their junior year and the fall of their senior year. Click the link below to view the Guidance Timeline.

FRESHMEN SEMINAR

The Guidance Counselors will meet with all grade 9 students during Titan Time October 5-8. Students will be asked to join the Freshmen Guidance Google Classroom. Topics that will be discussed include:


  • How to make an appointment with your counselor
  • Graduation requirements & credits
  • What is a transcript? Why is it important?
  • GPA
  • Naviance
  • Community service requirements
