News and Information
It has been a great first week! I have enjoyed beginning to learn about the students and families at the open house!
Each Friday you will get an email from Skyward with the link to the newsletter. Thanks for helping us “go paperless” as much as possible, and save $$ and a few trees too!
Jackets Needed!
It tends to get a little chilly at times in our classroom. Your child is welcome to bring a sweatshirt or jacket to leave at school in the closet so they'll have something to wear if they get cold.
If you’d like to sit with your child at lunch we’d love to have you. Lunch begins at 11:47 a.m. If you wish to eat the school lunch, please call the office to order a tray.
Homework
Your child's nightly homework: Read 20 minutes every night!
I will not be assigning “formal” homework each night. I tried this last year and it worked out great! If kids are giving me 100% at school all day, they need to be kids at night-- playing outside, spending time with family, and just being kids. That being said, I would like every child to read at least 20 minutes each night. They can read to themselves, take turns reading a book with you, or listen to you read but it really needs to happen every night! There may be times that students need extra practice at home with a certain skill and I will let you know some options for extra practice at home to help strengthen those skills.
Your child may have homework is when they are choosing not to complete their work during the time given in class. Ample time is given during class time to complete regular items assigned in class. Your child SHOULD NOT be bringing work home to finish. In the past I have not kept children in from recess for not completing their regular in class work. It has been my experience that those who do not finish in the given time most likely will not finish at recess. All daily work that needs to be finished at home will be stamped with a rubber stamp stating to finish and return by the date stamped on the paper (s). Work not returned by the date due will be recorded as a zero in the grade book.
If you child is absent, they will have work to make up at home. They have the number of days they were absent to finish and turn in the work.
Reading
This week reviewed some skills (vowel sounds, predicting, comprehension, vocabulary, setting, characters, problem and solution, making connections and comparisons) using Kevin Henkes' books Wemberly Worried, and Chrysanthemum. We are also working hard on our classroom procedures for our Daily 5 stations.

Homework Help and Hints!
Tired of writing those spelling words 3 or 5 times each nightly? Try typing them on the computer. Another fun way is to sprinkle some sand, salt, or sugar on a cookie sheet or plate. The child can practice writing their spelling words with their finger in the grainy substance.
Data Binders- Look for them Monday
You purchased a binder as part of your child’s school supplies to help with this new project. On Monday your child will bring home their Data Binder. Inside you will find graphs for math tests, math fact tests, reading levels, words read in 1 minute, behavior, spelling tests, and homework. The kids will be graphing their results each week for these subjects so we can all see their growth and progress throughout the year. I am asking that you look through their binder and sign the signature sheet that is inside. Also, please write a comment to your child about their work in the box next to your signature. Return the binder to school the next day.
If you have a question or comment for me, please write me a separate note or email so I can respond in a timely manner. I don't usually check their binders for signatures right then, so if you have a question or concern it may not been seen until later in the week if you address it in the binder comments page. Detailed information is coming home with the binder on Monday.
