"Achieving Our Dreams through Education"
A new way of thinking
Teaching the Skills Students Need To Be Successful
What Conscious Discipline Isn't & Is
With this weeks bulletin I would like to clear up a misunderstanding about Conscious Discipline. Conscious discipline is not a program. Please read that previous sentence again. Well if it's not a program then what is it? It is a framework based upon what is known scientifically concerning brain research. This framework, or view, can be used with any and all behavior programs; as well as in everyday life and relationships. This framework emphasizes self-control and emotional regulation. It is interesting to note that in order to motivate a student we must access the prefrontal cortex as it is an executive function of the brain. I do not think anyone could argue that students and us adults need these two skills to be successful.
One good way to understand a framework is by using the metaphor of a pair of glasses. Once you put a pair of glasses on; those glasses will influence how you see everything you look at.
What Our School Looks Like
The good news is that from our data, see the triangle below, it is clear that we do not have a school wide behavior issue. Our data shows this. Although we do have some challenging students, just like every other school in the country, it is not school-wide. The students who are struggling are identified and are receiving the support that is available. The problem areas have been identified to and support is being given in those areas. Red represents students who have 6 or more major behavior write ups and the yellow are those who have 2-5 write ups.
If we are going to hold kids to a certain standard, then we must teach them the skills they need to meet that standard. We can no longer operate under the assumption that students know how to behave. Teaching and learning is too important to allow misbehavior to interfere. Students need to be taught the skills they need to be successful.
What We Do
So then if CD is not our behavior program what is our behavior program? At Crow School we are working to implement the best practices from PBIS and are an MBI school and we have:
- 4 School-Wide Expectations: students must know what these are and how to demonstrate them.
- Teach To's or Routines students need to be successful in every area of our school.
- 8 Classroom management practices that when utilized are proven to help classroom become more productive.
- We have identified major and minor behaviors. When there is an issue and you are wondering if it is major or minor, always ask yourself: "Can I still teach? Can he/she still learn? Can the class still learn?"
For our school wide behavior program to work all four of the above elements must be implemented. The major and minor write ups alone will not help improve the classroom.
In schools today, the new was of thinking is to view behavior as a skill deficit not a character flaw, just like reading and math. Positive behaviors can be taught.
