iReady Tips for Administering the Diagnostic
Before you test:
Discuss student growth goals*
Student ‘typical’ growth goals are based on their performance on the first diagnostic. It is how many points they should grow for the year. Students who scored higher on the first diagnostic will have a smaller typical growth goal than someone who scored lower.
Stretch goals add an additional challenge, but keep in mind that only 20% of students will be able to complete this growth challenge.
Students utilize support features, like audio support and virtual tools and manipulatives.
Students are focused on their own screens during the Diagnostic.
Students use paper and pencil to do their work during the Mathematics Diagnostic and to take notes as needed during the Reading Diagnostic
Students in Grades K-1
If necessary, Review K Corner Activities in iReady Central
Devices with a touchscreen are recommended for these students
While you test:
Working on the test in short sessions is recommended:
Grades K-1: 30-40 minutes total, 2-3 testing periods, 15-20 minutes each
Grades 2-8: 45-60 minutes total, 3 testing periods, 20 minutes each
The teacher circulates around the room, looking for attentive behaviors and glancing at students’ computer screens and diagnostic progress bars to make sure students are staying on track and not rushing.
As students finish the diagnostic, they quietly transition to planned activities without disrupting peers who are still working.
Suggestion: Effort Rubric
After the test:
Celebrate individual, class and building success
Track new score on student data page
All students need to have a form for tracking their progress on iReady. Here are forms for each grade level for math and reading. Feel free to use other forms if you have something else, but all students need to be tracking their progress.
Looking for ideas?!
*Setting goals is a great opportunity to empower students to take ownership of their learning, promote a growth mindset, and improve academic achievement. The goal-setting process recognizes that each student is different and allows them to choose where they want to improve and what they want to achieve. It also encourages students to have a long-term vision of what they want to accomplish and the short-term motivation to keep them inspired to work hard along the way.
To set and track growth goals:
Watch the Data Chat videos
You are invited to a
Pancakes & Pajamas Party!
For: All PT students will be able to wear pajamas to school IF we reach our building goal on this Diagnostic. Our building goals are...50% in ELA & 40% in Math.
For our individual goals... Pancakes will be served in the cafeteria to all students that show any amount of growth in ELA and Math. There will be several toppings to choose from including syrup, chocolate chips, whipped cream, plus more.
Date: Thursday, January 30th
Time: TBD...schedules will come out closer to the 30th
Pineapple Calendar~This quarter we will try something new...during one TWW we will go visit a colleagues classroom for 15 minutes and then come back together to debrief. We will look at classroom organization, how students are responding to what’s being taught, student engagement, etc. Depending on the time of day will determine what subject area we will observe. The goal is to get some ideas to take back to your classroom and to see how OUR students are being engaged in other classrooms. The pineapple magnet will still be moved from classroom to classroom each week for other observations if desired.
Come see me if you have any questions or concerns. Let me know how I can further support you and your students in your classroom.
