Mr. Corso's Weekly Update

Mr. Corso's Message
Positive Raiders: Responsible, Respectful, Hard Working and Kind
Positive Message for the Week: Wednesday, I heard a story and I thought of our school, so I shared it on Thursday’s announcements: “An old man was walking along a beach that was littered with thousands of starfish that had been washed ashore by the high tide. As he walked he came upon a young boy who was eagerly throwing the starfish back into the ocean, one by one. Puzzled, the man looked at the boy and asked what he was doing. Without looking up, the boy simply replied, “I’m saving these starfish, Sir”. The old man chuckled aloud, “Son, there are thousands of starfish and only one of you. What difference can you make?” The boy picked up a starfish, gently tossed it into the water and turning to the man, said, “I made a difference to that one!” He picked up another one, tossed it, and said I made a difference to that one.” We have 1248 students and over 100 staff members. Each of you has unique talents and struggles. What if when a person was struggling at Black Mountain, there was always someone else to pick them up, to give them a smile, a warm greeting, a break, an upstander. That’s more than kindness, that’s the Home Field Advantage.”
Pre-ACT: On Wednesday, all 7th and 8th graders will be taking a short version of the pre-ACT test in their elective class. The ACT is a test used for college admissions. Our AVID program helps coordinate this effort to expose students to the college application process and it supports PUSD’s mission to prepare every student to thrive in college, career, and life.
Congratulations to our BMMS Science Olympiad Team for their excellent performance at the San Diego Regional Science Olympiad! 85 BMMS students competed in 23 team events including Anatomy, Circuit Lab, Crime Busters, Disease Detectives, Elastic Launched Gliders and Mousetrap Vehicle. BMMS placed 5th and will be moving on to the State tournament at Caltech in April!
This past week, one of my freshman son’s teachers sent a survey for parents in his class. I am so fortunate to be married to an amazing woman and I feel so lucky to partner with her in raising 4 children. She came up with the brilliant idea of us doing the survey together: her, me and our son. We shared our answers with him. The result was an amazing conversation that brought us even closer together. I would like to thank Mr. M for what he does for my son and our family. If you are interested, here are the questions. Could be a great family dinner discussion.
What are some of the things your daughter/son does for which you are grateful?
What is one thing that your daughter/son does that frustrates you?
What is one thing your daughter/son could do to support you in your daily life? Why do you think this would help?
What is one thing your daughter/son could do to support you in maintaining a healthy home environment? Why do you think this would help?
What would you like more than anything from your daughter/son? Why?

Join us at the next Principal’s Coffee to get the facts about the VAPING EPIDEMIC. Millions of teens across the United States are getting addicted to nicotine. Children can easily hide vaping devices from their parents because many of these trendy devices look like school supplies. Be in the know and keep your child safe.
Mt Carmel parents are also invited to attend.

The dynamic nature of the list, while potentially confusing, reflects the ongoing efforts of the community to both represent and welcome individuals with unique and evolving ways of defining themselves with regard to biological sex, gender identity, romantic attraction, sexuality, spirituality, and advocacy. Participate in a conversation focused on parenting and caregiving LGBTQIAP2+ children.
