Principal's Message
Dear Parents/Guardians,
School attendance is essential to academic success, but too often students, parents and schools do not realize how quickly absences - excused as well as unexcused - can add up to academic trouble. Chronic absence - missing 10 percent of the school year, or just 2-3 days every month—can translate into students failing courses or even dropping out of school. Chronic absence is an alarming, largely overlooked problem that is preventing too many of our students from having a chance to learn and succeed.
Punctuality and attendance are important habits for students to develop and maintain. In accordance with the laws of the State of New Jersey, Vineland High School requires students to attend school regularly to ensure continuity of instruction and classroom participation.
NJ State Law requires that Vineland High School documents all days when a student is absent and present from school. As such, the school will monitor your child’s attendance and timely arrival throughout the year. Part of this monitoring includes attendance letters to alert parents of these absences. Parents are also encouraged to monitor their child’s attendance through the Genesis Parent Portal. *NOTE: Students who have missed 18 or more days of school, excused or unexcused, will be labeled as “chronically absent” by the State of New Jersey.*
Thank you for your cooperation and assistance. We ask you to respect the importance of the school day by ensuring your student’s daily attendance and timely arrival. If you have any questions during the school year, please contact Vineland High School at (856)794-6700 or visit www.vineland.org for the district’s Attendance Policy #5200.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Suzette DeMarchi

Vineland High School Updates
VHS Teacher of the Year
Mr. James Lapsley is Vineland High School's Teacher of the Year! James (Jamie) Lapsley is a professional educator who has taught at Vineland High School for seventeen years. Jamie decided seventeen years ago to come back home to Vineland High, his alma mater, because he wanted to help his hometown and his school. He didn’t want to just teach, he wanted to be in a place where he wanted to make a difference. Since he has been at Vineland High School, he has never stopped giving of himself to help others.
He has tirelessly worked to perfect his teaching, but he has never stopped getting involved. Whether he is spending his time on the School Planning Team, The Rock the Roost Committee, Class of 2021 Advisor, The Service Learning team, The Dennis Tanner Committee, The Summer Transition Team or Department Chair, he has never stopped giving of himself for his students and his colleagues. Mr. Lapsley is an extremely dedicated professional to VHS and the community.

Message from the Nurse's office
Due to an increase in absences due to illness, please adhere to the following guidelines in order to reduce the spread of infection:
- If your child has a fever (100 degrees), please keep your child home until fever free for 24 hours. Do not give your child a fever reducing medicine (tylenol/advil/motrin) then send them to school.
- If your child is coughing uncontrollably and isn't responding well to over the counter medications, the child should be seen by a doctor.
- If your child is not well enough to attend a full day of school, please keep your child home until completely recovered to prevent the spread of any illness to another student or staff.
- All medications must be in the original container with appropriate label intact, and must be brought by an adult to the School Nurse’s office. At no time are students permitted to have medication in their possession (this includes over the counter medication). Students found in possession will be sent out for an immediate medical examination and drug screening as per the district's Substance Abuse policy #5530.
- Please contact the school nurse if you have any questions at (856)794-6800 ext. 2742 or 2529

NJSLA (Formally PARCC)
Students at VHS will take assessments to determine proficiency in English, Math and Science beginning in April (after Spring Break).
9th & 10th grades will take:
New Jersey Student Learning Assessment-ELA (NJSLA-ELA) and New Jersey Student Learning Assessment-Mathematics (NJSLA-M) Programs
The New Jersey Student Learning Assessments for English Language Arts/Literacy (NJSLA-ELA) and for Mathematics (NJSLA-M) measures the extent to which students are, or on track to being college or career ready in each of the two respective areas. The test in English Language Arts/Literacy assesses student proficiency in reading and comprehending a range of grade appropriate material independently. It also provides a measure of how effectively a student writes when using and/or analyzing sources.
The test in Mathematics measures student competencies in the major and additional/supporting content in mathematics for grade or course, as well as student grade-appropriate mathematical reasoning and modeling skills.
PASSING THESE ASSESSMENTS IS REQUIRED TO MEET THE STATE OF NJ REQUIREMENT FOR GRADUATION.
Students who do not meet the minimum scores required for proficiency by the end of 10th grade may take a secondary alternative assessment including SAT, ACT, ACCUPLACER, PSAT and ASVAB. Please contact your child's school counselor if they have not met this very important graduation requirement.
11th Grade students will take:
New Jersey Student Learning Assessment-Science (NJSLA-S) Program
This new assessment measures student proficiency in science according to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards. These standards require schools to teach students to use science and engineering practices, to make sense of phenomena, and to design solutions to problems.
If you have any questions regarding your child's test scores or graduation requirements please contact your child's school counselor.
