SLE WEEKLY UPDATE
September 16, 2022
Dear East Families,
Last week, we had a great turnout for our first annual Kick-Off For Autism Acceptance event. We raised money to support the Fredi the Pizzaman Foundation which helps make resources such as sensory equipment, adaptive technology, fidgets, flexible seating, and other items that may be used in the classroom environment. Thank you to Justin Wagoner and our Football Program for hosting this event!
On Wednesday, September 21, 2022, beginning at 6:30 p.m., and concluding at 8:00 p.m., parents and guardians are invited to meet their student's teachers and will have the opportunity to follow their student’s schedules and experience their day. Please refer to this Open House Flier September 21, 2022 document for the evenings schedule. This “Open House” is a great time to establish contact with your student’s teachers and learn all about the classes and course expectations. There will be an optional meeting for parents of sophomores and juniors in the auditorium to review some of the unique academic opportunities available to them beginning at 6:00 PM as well.
You can access your students schedule through Skyward. If you don’t have or don’t know your Skyward Family Access login and password (not your student’s account), please go to: Skyward Family Access Click on “Forgot your Login/Password?” and follow the prompts.
Have a fabulous weekend!
Be EAST!

Information From Special Education
Special Education: Procedural Safeguards
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a federal law for special education. The IDEA includes protections for parents and students. These protections are called the procedural safeguards. The Procedural Safeguards Notice is a document that describes in detail the rights and protections afforded to families. Take a moment to review the safeguards as we begin the 2022-2023 school year. If you have any questions, please call the SLCS Special Education Department at 248-573-8220.ACE Mentor – Student Program
High school students in the Detroit area can now benefit from a nationwide program designed to introduce them to the wide range of career opportunities open to young people in architecture, construction, engineering, and related areas of the building design and construction industry. At weekly meetings, student teams work directly with professionals from leading area firms, who volunteer their time to mentor the teams as they design hypothetical projects, tour local construction sites, and visit architectural, engineering and construction offices.
Students in the ACE program typically work closely with their mentors on projects that provide hands-on experience in solving the types of design, engineering and construction challenges industry professionals confront every day. The teams often learn how to use advanced computerized tools, such as AutoCAD, while special exercises and activities illustrate the industry’s demand for young people skilled in math, physics, economics, art and other disciplines. Many ACE affiliates culminate their program year with special events at which teams present their concepts to mentors, families, teachers and community leaders.

ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES
To report a student's absence or to excuse a student for early release please leave a message on the Attendance Line - (248) 573-8710.
Absences are cumulative for the entire semester. On the occasion of each unexcused absence, the Office will send a Skylert message for an unexcused absence to the parent. Good attendance is critical for each student’s academic success. Should your child be exhibiting signs of illness, the guidelines below may help you decide whether to have them miss school.
Students are expected to come to class daily and arrive at all six of their classes on time. Encouraging students to be respectful of others is key to ensuring that we maintain a safe and welcoming learning environment for all. As an institution that educates teenagers, we realize that instilling these habits now will help ensure a positive entrance into post-secondary education and the workplace. Please note, that all students participating in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities are expected to be in attendance for the FULL SCHOOL DAY in order to participate in any competitions or events on that day.
