Learning Updates for this Month
Kindergarten: Welcome back from Winter break! Hope you all enjoyed your time together. We are halfway through the year and are getting ready to start the 3rd marking period. Our Kindergartners are working hard every day and learning so many great things. We are still working on learning all of our letter sounds and using those sounds to read 3 letter words (cvc). We will start adding in blends to our words to further our reading skills. We are also practicing and learning new sight words every day. In Math, we will continue counting to 40, and eventually to 60 soon! We will also start looking at coins. We will start with counting and sorting money. Please remember to dress appropriately for the weather, now that we are in the heart of winter, and don't forgot those shoes!
First Grade: In reading, first graders will be working on reading fiction stories, with a focus on understanding the characters in their stories. In phonics, they will continue to learn how to read new digraphs and will practice reading words with blends and digraphs in context. In math, our first graders are working on being to add and subtract using a number line as a tool. It is so exciting to see these kiddos grow as learners!
Second Grade: Second graders are continuing to read and learn through informational texts. We are then moving on to a deeper fiction study with a focus on book clubs. Our students are learning how to read longer and more complex words with different vowel teams. In math, second graders are learning various strategies for adding and subtracting higher numbers. We are also looking closely at graphs and equations that match these graphs. Second graders are becoming great writers through daily journal time and a focus on writing about our opinions.
E.L: In EL, students are learning vocabulary about neighborhood places, weather and seasons, celebrations, and homes. Students continue to build vocabulary through the online program called Flocabulary. EL tutoring has started this week! We are so glad to be able to support our EL learners through this after school program.
Social Emotional Learning (SEL): This week in Social Emotional Learning, all students will be learning about how to respond to and avoid bullying situations.
Practice these skills at home using the following resources: Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade
