Taking Care of YOU!
St. Patrick School is blessed with good parents who work hard for their kids and work hard for our school. I see you in the pick up line, where you have arranged your work schedule to be able to get here in time, ready to run off to the first event of the evening. I see you stepping up to volunteer for various activities, giving your time to your child, his teams, our school. I hear your struggles with nightly homework rituals and routines, and getting your kids from this tournament to that practice to this rehearsal. I have never had the privilege of working with a more caring, hardworking, selfless group of parents.
In the weeks ahead, the holidays will greet us. We'll be organizing travel or family gatherings. We'll struggle to get our kids to dress nicely, smile for pictures, and eat their dinner. We'll get frustrated as we leave a 3 hour meal where the table was filled with a bounty of turkey and mashed potatoes and green bean casserole and as we're driving home, our beautiful, wonderful child says, "I'm hungry." or "What's for dinner?". (Maybe that's just what happens in MY car on the ride home!)
It's important, though, to stop, breathe, and take time for YOU. As a mom of four, whose kids are growing up and moving onto college, I can tell you first hand that the time will come when things start to slow down in your life. You'll find yourself at home after work with this feeling of..."What am I forgetting?" or "Am I supposed to be somewhere tonight?" only to realize that no, in fact, you have nothing on the schedule. Even though that may sound heavenly as you read this, I'm here to tell you that it is a very strange feeling. While I'm thrilled to have less after school running, I find myself with this new found thing. Time.
Turns out, being alone with nothing to do isn't always as fun as I thought it might be. I find myself wondering, "What did I ever do for fun before I had kids??"
It's important, as your kids grow up that, you don't forget to stop and take care of YOU. Make time for yourself, spend time with friends, keep up hobbies that you enjoy. Of course, we still have a million things to do for our kids, but maybe instead of sitting to watch soccer practice from the car, you could take a walk, listen to some music, and just breathe. Or read a book, something YOU enjoy, while that load of laundry is finishing up. Eat food that doesn't end in "burger" or "nugget". Better yet, find a restaurant you love and schedule a parents night out. Go see a matinee movie that ISN'T a cartoon.
We appreciate all you do for your children and for our school, and we know that every minute you spend with us here is a minute you sacrifice of your own personal time. Thank you for dedicating yourself to the St. Patrick community...and please, find time to take care of YOU! As stressful as the days get, as worn out as you are, I'm here to tell you to make the time now to remind yourself of who YOU are, because before you know it...(see below)
