EC Newsletter: June 2019
Exceptional Supports for Literacy & Learning
Have a Great Summer! We look forward to seeing you in the fall!
we are looking for ways that central office can improve the support we provide to you... stay tuned for more details at the start of next school year!!
Do you support students in K-3 ELA, 6th Grade ELA, or 8th Grade Math?
Please see below for information about the required curriculum training for EC teachers who support K-3 ELA, 6th Grade ELA, and 8th Grade Math. You should have received the information below from your principal. If not, please use the registration links below!
Given the comprehensive nature of the curriculum, there will be a two-day training for teachers on June 11 & 12. Teachers will attend both days.
- Teachers must register to help facilitators personalize training to the needs of teachers as outlined in the following forms:
- Information on location is forthcoming.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to Diane Powell, Director of Literacy or Jenni Greene, Director of Secondary Curriculum Development.
ECATS is coming!
Although we are still waiting on more information from DPI, it looks like the state will be implementing both the Special Education and Service Documentation (Medicaid) modules in August. The MTSS modules will be available at a later date to be determined by DPI. There will be a “dark period” over the summer where EasyIEP will not be available. The exact dates of this period have not been announced, but staff should plan to have all meetings held and paperwork finalized by the last day of school (6/12/19). All finalized documents will transfer to ECATS. Drafts and information in the workspace will not.
Any meetings held during the “dark period” will need to be done on paper using the forms located on DPI’s website. DPI has 2 sets of forms on their site (the forms currently being used and the new forms that will go into effect in July). Directions for each of these forms are also included on DPI’s website. You may use either set of forms if you are holding meetings during the dark period, but please keep in mind that information from all meetings held during the dark period must be entered in ECATS when the system becomes available.
- Current forms: https://ec.ncpublicschools.gov/policies/forms/statewide-forms
- New forms: https://ec.ncpublicschools.gov/policies/forms/state-forms-directions.
Required training for ECATS for all EC case managers and other pertinent staff will occur during the Professional Learning Symposium. Click HERE for the principal memo with more information.

SHOUT OUTS!
Congratulations!!
Trip to the Zoo!
A shout out to Kelly Elzie, EC teacher at River Gate Elementary, for organizing and implementing the inclusion of an EC student on a 2nd grade zoo field trip, as the student had never been to the zoo. A shout out to the third-grade teachers for making a personalized
t-shirt for the third grader to wear on the field trip! Our student will be completing a book using assistive technology via Read and Write for Google about his trip. Social emotional learning incorporating academics with collaboration by related services.

2019 – 2020 VSA Emerging Young Artists Program
This call for art asks artists to plug in, to span new distances, and to see unexpected relationships. When is connection, or disconnection, most needed? What roads lead there? Overlapping stories and interconnected ideas can overwhelm or can create important new discoveries. We're asking artists for work that resonates deeply and may spur greater shared connections and understanding of our connected lives.
The VSA Emerging Young Artists Program, a Jean Kennedy Smith Arts and Disability Program, recognizes and showcases the work of emerging young artists with disabilities, ages 16-25, living in the United States.
Fifteen artists will be selected by jury. Grand Prize is $20,000, First Prize is $10,000, Second Prize is $6,000, and the remaining Awards of Excellence are $2,000 each. Selected winning artwork will travel in a yearlong national exhibition. Winning artists will receive an all-expenses-paid professional development workshop at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
