Linwood Elementary Newsletter
April 2022
Principal's Message
Dear Community and Families,
This weekend we enjoyed the official first day of Spring, and as students will tell you, sunshine is something that makes my heart happy. As we head into April, we have the opportunity to meet with you and celebrate your children. Spring conferences are March 28th through April 1st, so be sure to get connected with your child’s teacher and stop by the office to say hi if you have a moment.
This next month our school-wide character focus is on responsibility. This is also one of our Linwood PAWS. The letter in "A" in PAWS stands for "Act Responsibly". The dictionary talks about responsibility in a few ways: duty, accountability, and the independence to make decisions. We are using a slightly different definition at Linwood; Responsibility - to take action and understand how our choices affect others, ourselves, and the world.
Here are some conversations and activities to do with your children:
- What are the responsibilities you have at home? How do people know what they are responsible for? Which responsibilities are you really good at?
- What’s something that you want for our home? Would getting this thing demonstrate responsibility with our time, money, or energy? If so, how might we earn this special something by showing responsibility?
- Play the responsibility game (chore game) choose 3-5 chores and see who can get them done the fastest as well as done well!
Here is an article on responsibility for parents – Teaching Kids Responsibility
It is a joy to work with your children and to see their smiling eyes and faces. I look forward to going to work each day. Thank you for sharing your children with us.

Kindergarten & New Student Enrollment for 2022-23
To get the process started, go to the enrollment portal located under the "Students" tab on the Spokane Public Schools homepage. If you don't already have a child attending an SPS school, you will need to create an account. If you've previously enrolled then you can add your kindergartener to your existing account. Complete the registration paperwork, either online or by printing it out.
After registering online, you will be contacted to bring a birth certificate or other official verification of age (such as a passport or visa), medically verified immunization records, and proof of residency to the school.
Please note: The priority window for kindergarten families to apply to attend a school other than their assigned neighborhood school closes March 31. By mid-April, families will find out whether or not their student has been accepted based on capacity or, for some programs, the lottery system.

5th and 6th Grade Volleyball A Huge Success!
Linwood had 27 boys and girls who participated for five weeks, with the season ending in a staff vs. student match that was so much fun! (Staff WON!)
Students learned how to bump, set, and spike the ball over the net. They also learned how to overhand and underhand serve the ball! Their improvement on these skills throughout the season was amazing.
Teamwork was also a huge part of practice since volleyball is a team sport! I was so impressed with how hard they all worked, and how dedicated they were coming to practice each day! The best part was seeing them encourage one another to try again when they made a mistake! Their positive attitudes were contagious! I encouraged all of them to try out for volleyball in middle school!

Linwood Olympics 2022
"Let the Games Begin and Light the Fire Within" was the theme for the Olympics in the gym this year and the students had a lot of fun. For the few weeks leading up to the Olympics the whole school focused on the three values of the Olympics: respect, friendship and excellence. Mrs. Z had all students train during warm up time and learn about the three values.
Every class also picked a country to represent and made flags to bring to the gym for their opening ceremonies. After their ceremony every class got to rotate around to some fun stations. We had curling, skating, luge, skeleton, hockey, ski jump and a slalom event.
During this week the students also worked hard to gain points for respect, friendship and excellence both in the gym and also out at recess. The week was a great success. Pictures from the week are included below.
