This week in review...
Huge thank you to our families for supporting us while school closed. Whether it was finding childcare, changing work schedules, or supporting your children to complete make-up work and packets, we are so fortunate for all you did to support during school closure. We are so happy to have our staff back on campus supporting our Panthers.
This week we will complete the quarter on Thursday, March 30th and head into spring break, starting with Cersar Chavez Day this Friday. There are several opportunities around Los Angeles to support continued learning for children during break time; including: visiting a museum, a zoo, the tar pits, or simply going to a movie and discussing the character development or storyline. We hope you enjoy spring break and are excited to close out the school year on a high note!
Big THANK YOU to our parents & staff who attended PTSA Elections. We are excited to bring in the new PTSA board and support Laurel CACT in fundraising campaigns for the coming school year! Congratulations to the new & returning board members.
This week we will be scheduling 5th, 6th & 7th graders into classes next year! We are excited to announce that we will introduce an accelerated math pathway for our current 6th grade students to get them to Algebra prior to leaving middle school. Students must earn an A or B in math and pass standardized assessment at grade level standard to qualify for accelerated math. All 7th & 8th grade students will take video production as one of their two electives. For second elective, we are introducing a Spanish elective option for students in grades 7 & 8, per the request of our students AND we will be introducing robotics rounding out our creative technologies theme. Please discuss these options with your children as they will be selecting their first and second choices this week. Elementary school students will have Dance (3-5), Art (K-5) Music (2-5) and Film, along with some introductory coding next fall.
We sent home Covid-19 tests for use prior to returning from spring break. If your child did not receive one on Friday, please have them pick up a test this week.
When we return in April we will celebrate Autism Awareness, School Library & Celebrating Diversity Month.

High Dosage Tutoring - Begins April 10
We have partnered with AirTutors to provide students small group, virtual tutoring sessions in Math/English. High dosage tutoring will take place after school on Mondays and Wednesdays at Laurel CACT in our collaborative space. Students will be grouped based on needed intervention in the subject of choice and will be supported by a live small group tutor via zoom.
Sessions will begin on April 10, when we return from break for all students who have registered.
Air Tutors partnered with Mathematica, a public policy research firm, to evaluate Air Tutors’ high dosage tutoring program in the 2020-2021 school year with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Interim results suggest that students who participated in Air Tutors achieved significantly higher growth on i-Ready than the national average. Students who participated in at least 15 sessions grew an average of 6.7 percentile points on i-Ready from the winter to spring i-Ready administrations relative to the national average.
