BMES Family Weekly Update
Week of May 29, 2022
Message from Principal Wagner
May 29, 2022
Good evening BMES Families,
Just a reminder that on Monday, May 30, our school will be closed in honor of Memorial Day. Please enjoy this time with family and remembering all the veterans how have served our county!
As you know the end of the school is quickly approaching and we will collect YCSD 1:1 devices on Monday, June 6, that were issued to students for the school year. If your student will be attending Summer Academy/Summer Enrichment programs, they will not turn their devices in until later in the summer. BMES staff will still check in those devices but immediately check them back out to ensure they are in working order. Per the YCSD 1:1 Technology device agreement signed before issue, parents may be charged for defacement and/or damages to the device. Before the time comes to turn it in, please inspect the device carefully. Here are some tips for a successful return of your student(s)’ device(s):
Use the following checklist to ensure that your student’s device is ready to be turned in, so that you are aware of any potential charges:
- The case or shell of the device is not cracked or damaged.
- There are no stickers, tape, gummy residue, or writing on the device (except the bar code). There are products that might remove adhesive, however, make sure the device is not damaged by such a product.
- There is no damage to the ports (nothing broken off in ports) – check to be sure you have removed headphones, thumb drives, USB dongles, or any other external tools.
- There are no screen cracks/damage when powered on or off.
- There are no missing or stuck keys on keyboard.
- The correct power adapter and cable for the device is included and is not crushed, bent, frayed, or damaged.
On the day that the devices are returned, a receipt will be issued to your child indicating any noted damages (if any). A picture will be taken of the device at the time it is turned in.
Field Day (June 7) Volunteer Update: We are all set with volunteers for our morning session. Thank you to all that have returned a form and committed your time that day. We have seen an increase in afternoon volunteers but are still in need, so if you can lend yourself from 12:45-2:45 to help make this a great experience for our kids, that would be greatly appreciated.
Due to the number of volunteers expected, if you are planning to volunteer, please try to make plans to walk to BMES that day as our parking lot will not hold the number of cars for every volunteer that has returned a form.
Thanks for all that you do. If you can volunteer and haven't returned the volunteer form yet, please let Mr. Carel know at jcarel@ycsd.york.va.us.
Have a wonderful evening,
Mrs. Wagner

June 7- FIELD DAY
- K-2 @ 9AM-11AM
- 3RD-5TH @ 12:45-2:45PM
Thank you to all of the Field Day volunteers that have already turned in a form. We have received a lot of volunteer forms for the K-2 session in the morning and are still in need of volunteers for the afternoon 3-5 session. As a reminder, if you are volunteering please make plans for any non-school aged children to not attend, as I will need our volunteer’s attention focused solely on our students/activities. If you are in need of a volunteer form, there are more available in the front office. Be on the lookout for more information coming home with your child as our event gets closer. Thanks again for all that you do.

Barnes and Noble- Summer Reading
Free Summer Early Learning Opportunity Available for Rising Kindergarten Students
Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow is encouraging parents of children entering kindergarten this fall to take advantage of a free online summer learning program provided by Waterford.org, a Utah-based nonprofit specializing in early learning.
The program provides 20-25 minutes of daily age-appropriate reading, mathematics and science instruction and includes all necessary software and technology — including home internet access, if needed — at no cost to participating families.
Balow encourages parents of rising kindergartners to register as soon as possible as online instruction begins June 6. Parents may register online or by phone at (888) 982-9898.
Waterford.org is making its Upstart Summer Learning Path program available to Virginia families at no cost through a partnership with the Overdeck Family Foundation.
In addition to technology and software, participating families will receive weekly support from a literacy and school readiness coach, with coaching services available in more than 20 languages.
Waterford.org will also provide software licenses to all children in participating homes, including early learners not participating directly but in need of instructional support in reading, math and science.
As an added bonus, families of rising kindergartners who successfully complete the Upstart Summer Learning Program may keep their laptops.

Food Services Update
For the past two school years, meals have been provided to all YCSD students at no cost through a waiver provided by the USDA. This waiver will not be reissued. Instead, breakfast and lunch meals will return to a paid status, with no charges allowed, beginning this summer. Free or reduced price meals will be available (upon application and approval) to students whose family income falls within federally established guidelines. Families with students participating in Summer Academy programs who would like to take advantage of free or reduced price meal options are asked to submit applications by Wednesday, June 1, 2022, if applications have not already been submitted. Please go to myschoolapps.com to access the application. This application period will cover families until October 31, 2022.
Paper Applications are also available in all school offices so feel free to ask your child's teacher for a copy if needed.
Additional information regarding free or reduced price meal applications for the 2022-23 school year will be provided before the start of the year. If you have questions, please call 757-898-0468 or 757-898-0485 or visit the Let’s Talk – Ask YCSD platform.
YCSD Breakfast and Lunch Menus

The School Board has approved the 2022-23 school year calendar. The first day of school will be Monday, August 29, 2022. Under state law, the Friday before Labor Day must be a student holiday, creating a 4-day weekend. Next year's calendar is available on the division website.
