Senior Spotlight - Tyler "Jay" Keeney

We are super proud of Jay Keeney as he will graduate in May from Weatherford High School with plans to go to Southwest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf in Big Spring to study Deaf Education. He would someday like to be a teacher for the Deaf and/or supervisor of a Regional Day School Program for the Deaf. He is very active at Weatherford High School. Jay works weekly at Wright Elementary in the Brazos RDSPD classroom to support and mentor to the DHH students he serves. He has also been actively involved in Deaf, Deaf World and Imagination Texas Special Weekend for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. In his free time he enjoys dancing and socializing in the Deaf community. Jay is an enthusiastic learner, compassionate person, and dedicated to contributing to the Deaf community. Congratulations, Jay!!!

Brazos River RDSPD Optimist Communication Contest for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing

March 5th, the Brazos River RDSPD will hold it's annual Optimist Communication Contest event at the Weatherford High School Library. The day begins with our guest speaker, Scott Daily. (See video below) After a catered lunch, students from all the BRRDSPD districts will compete in the contest speaking to this year's topic, "Is There a Fine Line Between Optimism and Reality?" Finalist will go on to compete at the North Texas Finals with a chance to win a $2,500 scholarship. Brazos River has had scholarship winners both in 2017 (Tammy Wilson) and 2018 (Jodi Oesterle, pictured). This is a fierce competition and a lot of fun. Parents are welcome to the event. Congratulations to Andrew Rivera - UIL Solo and Ensemble Competition 2019

Check out this picture of Andrew wearing his First Division Medal for his solo playing Saxophone as part of his participation in the Hall Middle School Band. Way to Go, Andrew!

Congratulations to Chloe Cook-Certified Interpreter

Chloe Cook is now officially a certified interpreter working for the Brazos River RDSPD. Chloe came to us with amazing skills that we put to great use as a communication assistant. The passing rate for the interpreter certification test is about 30% and requires a two-step process. Chloe, we knew you could do it! Congratulations on this huge achievement that will better serve the students of the Brazos River RDSPD!!!!!

SPOTLIGHT ON THREE I CAN! PROGRAMS

I would like to spotlight three of our many exciting transitional programs for our high school-aged participants!

I Can! Gear Up for College is a FUN week-long college preparation program where they will be coming together to learn how to grab every opportunity to get ahead in college while making the most of their future college experience!

I Can! Code, another one of our week-long programs, is FULL of opportunities to learn about coding, and will be involving drones, video gaming design, programming, and much more!

I Can! Learn STEM, a DeafTEC funded program, is for those who wish to explore their STEM passions, to possibly become a famous marine biologist, a talented engineer, or something else just as fabulous! A visit to NASA and other two colleges will be included too!

PICTURED: I Can! Learn STEM participants visited Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi and received a private tour of the workings behind-the-scene to learn about marine biology.

To learn more about our many camps and programs, please visit TexasDeafEd.org/SP. If you have any questions or would like to receive a hard copy of the 2019 Summer Camps & Programs Booklet, send an email to Rachella Moore, Summer Camps & Programs Coordinator at Rachella.Moore@tsd.state.tx.us.
