RESPONSIBILITY

This month Onslow County Schools is celebrating RESPONSIBILITY. Students and teachers are learning new ways to be dependable, accountable for their actions and encouraging one another to be safe at NWES.

LITERACY SPOTLIGHT

If the Literacy Coaches could tell you one thing that can guarantee an increase in your child's reading abilities, it would be: READ with your child. Listening to someone read aids students in learning inflection, the use of punctuation, and developing vocabulary. Asking questions such as, "What is the author's reason for writing this book? What does he/she want you to learn?" will get your child thinking.

Written response often holds students back from moving to the next reading level. They can word call, answer oral comprehension, but have difficulty writing a response to what they have read. It helps for students to practice writing what happened at the beginning, middle, and end of a story. Writing a short summary also aids with written response.

From the Literacy Coaches at NWES--Thank you parents for all you do to aid in your child's educational development. You are the first and most important teacher your child will ever have!

NWES CANNED FOOD DRIVE

It is time to spread a little cheer and help Onslow County Families. Our canned food drive will help support the Onslow Christmas Cheer program. NWES has a goal of 3000 non-perishable items. These items can be canned meats, canned vegetables, rice, pasta, macaroni and cheese, cereal and cookies.

Every student who brings in 5 items will qualify for the Glow Party on December 13.

"THE SNOWBALL EXPRESS"

The PTO is sponsoring a holiday gift shop "The Snowball Express". Students will have the opportunity to pick out their own inexpensive, high quality gifts for family and friends. Gifts range from a quarter up to twelve dollars. A flyer and money envelope went home with students before Thanksgiving outlining the details.
