The Hungate Echo
Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Autumn Term - Issue 6
A word from Mr Broom
On Tuesday we had a lovely celebration assembly for the parents of our Year 6 children to celebrate their achievements at Low Mill. This was followed by Year 5/6 open classrooms, where the parents/carers were able to come and view the hard work going in the children's workbooks. Further open classrooms are scheduled for other year groups so please check the public calendar.
Martyn Sibley, the STARMAT CEO, visited school on Thursday and continues to be impressed by the hard work of our children and staff who create 'a warm and welcoming learning environment'. We are really fortunate to have so many happy children who love to come to school.
Finally, many thanks to the parents who have taken the time to send in 'staff shout-outs'. I've made a display of them in the staffroom and they are so uplifting for everyone concerned.

Feedback Review
I took the opportunity to evaluate our feedback from the parent questionnaire on Thursday afternoon. It seems that there are many positives to celebrate and that, on the whole, we seem to be doing a good job! A key issue that has arisen is around the communication of what the children are learning and what school is doing. So in response:
- we have this weekly newsletter, containing key information about the weekly life of school. If you know people who aren't accessing this, please tell them about it!
- our website (www.sherburnhungate.net) has lots of information about the curriculum and what the children are learning.
- we have open classroom events for each year group every term where you can come along and see your child's progress in their workbooks and meet the teachers.
- we have classroom window displays that provide links and information about the life of school.
- our school calendar (available on the homepage of our website) details all events available.
- we have an active Friends' Association that you would all be most welcome to join.
- each class has its own Twitter feed that you can subscribe to. This is the best way of seeing what learning is taking place in classes. There's a minimum of three tweets per week, per year group.
If you have any further suggestions of how we could better communicate with parents, please let me know. Your feedback is as always, very welcome.

School Start Times Reminder
School doors open at 0840 and children are met on the playground by their teacher.
School doors close at 0845. After this time, children are late to school.
We have a few children who are persistently late and we need to ensure that they arrive on time so that they can start their learning. Please support us with this.

School Attendance
It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!
Congratulations to our Year 5 children who are our attendance champions in school this week with 99.3%!
Our average attendance this week is 97.3% which is back above the national average.
We have a small number of children whose attendance is well below the national expectations. These children are known as persistently absent when their attendance falls below 90%. I will be making telephone calls to parents of these children.
Thank you for your continued support with our attendance drive. It is really appreciated.
