Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Autumn Term - Issue 6

Big picture

A word from Mr Broom

Week 6 of 8 has been a busy one. On Monday Adventure Photography came to take our school photographs and they looked fantastic, with so many happy, smiling children. I really do hope you like them.

On Tuesday we had a lovely celebration assembly for the parents of our Year 6 children to celebrate their achievements at Low Mill. This was followed by Year 5/6 open classrooms, where the parents/carers were able to come and view the hard work going in the children's workbooks. Further open classrooms are scheduled for other year groups so please check the public calendar.

Martyn Sibley, the STARMAT CEO, visited school on Thursday and continues to be impressed by the hard work of our children and staff who create 'a warm and welcoming learning environment'. We are really fortunate to have so many happy children who love to come to school.

Finally, many thanks to the parents who have taken the time to send in 'staff shout-outs'. I've made a display of them in the staffroom and they are so uplifting for everyone concerned.

Feedback Review

I took the opportunity to evaluate our feedback from the parent questionnaire on Thursday afternoon. It seems that there are many positives to celebrate and that, on the whole, we seem to be doing a good job! A key issue that has arisen is around the communication of what the children are learning and what school is doing. So in response:

- we have this weekly newsletter, containing key information about the weekly life of school. If you know people who aren't accessing this, please tell them about it!

- our website (www.sherburnhungate.net) has lots of information about the curriculum and what the children are learning.

- we have open classroom events for each year group every term where you can come along and see your child's progress in their workbooks and meet the teachers.

- we have classroom window displays that provide links and information about the life of school.

- our school calendar (available on the homepage of our website) details all events available.

- we have an active Friends' Association that you would all be most welcome to join.

- each class has its own Twitter feed that you can subscribe to. This is the best way of seeing what learning is taking place in classes. There's a minimum of three tweets per week, per year group.

If you have any further suggestions of how we could better communicate with parents, please let me know. Your feedback is as always, very welcome.

Tag Rugby Finalists

Our Tag Rugby team visited Selby Rugby Club on Thursday to take part in a Tag Rugby tournament against 12 other schools. The team managed to win all their group matches before bowing out 5-4 in the final; a tremendous achievement and testimony to the hard work of the children and Mr Wooffindin, and much increased fitness since we introduced the daily mile.

School Start Times Reminder

Just a quick reminder of our school start times.

School doors open at 0840 and children are met on the playground by their teacher.

School doors close at 0845. After this time, children are late to school.

We have a few children who are persistently late and we need to ensure that they arrive on time so that they can start their learning. Please support us with this.

Grapes - If you bring 'em, slice 'em

We've noticed that many of our packed lunches contain whole grapes as part of the meal. If you would like to include grapes in your child's pack up, please ensure that all grapes are sliced. This significantly reduces the chance of choking. Thank you.

Leeds United Girls Football Club

Leeds United Development Centre have been into school to say that they would very much like to continue the girls football development club and I think it's a great idea to add this to our range of extra-curricular provision.

As it is provided by Leeds United a small fee of £2.50 per session is payable to the coach providing the session.

It is important to note that our school is simply the host for these sessions and all queries need to go through the coaches who lead the sessions.

Staff Shout Outs

Are you impressed by what our staff do for your child? Let them know! Complete the form below.

Parent/Carer Survey

Around this time last year we asked you for your thoughts and opinions on school and how we could make things better. We took a lot of your ideas, implemented them, and I believe our school is a better place because of your input. Thank you.

It's now time to give your opinions again. We really appreciate positive and constructive feedback so that we can further improve on our journey to outstanding. Please click on the link below:

Nut Allergies

If your child brings either a snack or a pack up to school, please help us to protect some of our children who have nut allergies by checking that the products you send with them do not contain any nuts. Thank you.

School Attendance

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Year 5 children who are our attendance champions in school this week with 99.3%!

Our average attendance this week is 97.3% which is back above the national average.

We have a small number of children whose attendance is well below the national expectations. These children are known as persistently absent when their attendance falls below 90%. I will be making telephone calls to parents of these children.

Thank you for your continued support with our attendance drive. It is really appreciated.

Mobiles on Site

Our teachers have planned exciting lessons for all our children and when they leave school, we're confident that they will want to share their day with you. Conversation is really important to your child's development and for this reason, we're asking that you refrain from using your phone on the school site at drop off and pick up times.
