Message from Mrs. Wattiez
Hello Wickham families,
I wanted to reach out to you this week to let you know of a few more resources and activities that you can access. These resources and activities can be used from Kindergarten through sixth grade.
One of the skills we practice in counseling lessons is being able to calm down when you are feeling strong emotions. One way we practice calming down is by using deep breathing. This is a way for children to focus on their breathing and calm their body during moments when they are feeling a strong emotion (such as anger, worry, frustration). Students have practiced this in counseling class by taking deep breaths in through their nose and slowing letting the air out through their mouth.
You can practice this skill with your family by making the breathing activity fun. One way students have learned to practice is by doing Rainbow Breaths. In order to do a Rainbow Breath you breathe in through your nose while lifting hands over your head like a rainbow arch. Breathe out with your mouth while lowering your arms back to your side.
Another way you can practice breathing is by creating your own animal breaths. Have your child think of an animal they like and something that animal is known to do (such as an Bird might flap its wings to fly). Try to make that action into a deep breathing activity- for the Bird I might breathe in while I open my arms wide like a bird and breathe out while I lower my arms to my side. You can be creative and think of many different animals and actions to go along with it!
In addition, I wanted to remind you that I continue to be available to provide support. I am available by email at wattiez.mallory@iowacityschools.org. I also use the app TalkingPoints which can translate messages between us and go directly to your phone via SMS. If you would like to talk with me using TalkingPoints, you can download the parent app and use the code RPTEQK to join my class “Mrs. W- Counseling.”
