Math Strategy for Problem Solving and Computation:
Part Part Whole
Part part whole relationships (PPW) involve seeing numbers as being made of two or more parts. Many researchers have said this is the major conceptual achievement of the early years. A strong understanding of PPW has been shown to increase understanding of subsequent work with place value, number concepts, and word problems.
After students learn to count, they need to work on part part whole relationships before beginning addition and subtraction. The Hands On Math program follows this order.
As in the other number relationships, students use counting as a scaffold to form their ideas about PPW. When students are exploring parts of a number, they need to work with one number in a variety of ways and with a variety of concrete materials. We also want to use a multi sensory approach, which requires visualization and begins to move students away from relying on their counting skills.
Somebody Wanted But So Then strategy
Purpose of the ‘Somebody Wanted But So Then strategy: The Somebody-Wanted-But-So strategy (MacOn, Bewell & Vogt, 1991, Beers, 2003) is used during or after reading. It provides a framework to use when summarizing the action of a story or historical event by identifying key elements. The strategy also helps students identify the main ideas, recognize cause and effect relationships, make generalizations, identify differences between characters and look at various points of view. It is more often used with narrative text but can also be used with expository text. For example SWBST can be used to summarize the goal/motivation, conflict, event or barrier of a historic or contemporary character or group of people.
Here at Miller We CARE
What are Buckaroos?
Each Thursday, all classroom teachers will nominate students (3-4) from their homeroom class that exhibit behaviors aligned to C.A.R.E. The students will vote anonymously for the Buckaroo of the Week on Friday. The Buckaroo of the week will be announced in their classroom at the end of the day on Friday. Friendly Reminder from Nurse Johnson
WHEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME FROM SCHOOL
Hi Parents! We are seeing an increasing number of flu cases in the community during this time. The first and most important step in preventing flu is to get a flu vaccination each year. CDC also recommends everyday preventive actions (like staying away from people who are sick, covering coughs and sneezes and frequent handwashing) to help slow the spread of germs that cause respiratory (nose, throat, and lungs) illnesses, like flu. (CDC)
Please remind your kids to keep their hands clean. Keeping hands clean through improved hand hygiene is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others.
Please talk to your kids about staying healthy and preventing the spread of germs.
1. Wash hands with soap and water
2. Use hand sanitizer
3. Do NOT touch your eyes, nose, or mouth
4. Use a tissue for coughing, sneezing and blowing nose
5. Cover your cough and sneeze with your elbow (Cough and sneeze, elbow please! )
Thank you for helping us prevent the spread of infection by keeping your child home when they are ill.
Parenting in the Age of Social Media: Part 2
Please join us for our 2nd Student and Parent Empowerment Program, "Parenting in the Age of Social Media: Part 2!" Our guest speaker will be Detective Wade Hornsby.
