School Opportunities
A Month of Art learning in April!
Art challenges our mind to think in a different way and in so doing it helps students both academically and behaviorally. Look at this recent study on how art programs in school showed improved verbal, reading and math skills as well as critical thinking skills. With such a broad subject to explore this month, we will only be able to touch on a few disciplines in both fine arts and performing arts. We encourage you to find what interests and engages your student and explore beyond what is covered here.
This week we will be looking at drawing and painting. Drawing is believed to be one of the oldest forms of art. Before the written language, drawing was used as a form of communication depicting objects and abstract concepts. Over time, drawing included adding color, which slowly led to painting. As civilizations developed, so did drawing and painting. For a brief history of drawing timeline, click here. This week we are including some drawing and painting resources for your students to enjoy. As Pablo Picasso said, “Every child is an artist.”

Field Trips and Events
CPA - Homeschool Hub Field Trips & Events (FTE)
IMPORTANT UPDATE: As of March 12, 2022, masks are no longer mandated for indoor activities; however, they are still strongly recommended and permitted for those who wish to continue wearing them.
Although masks are no longer mandated for public schools, they may still be required by some field trip venues. Please thoroughly review the field trips details before signing up for any in-person activities. Also, keep in mind that field trip venue policies are subject to change.
Protecting the health, safety, and wellbeing of our school community remains our top priority as we adjust to the new masking requirements. The following health and safety protocols are still recommended.
General Health and Safety Protocols
Staff, students, and students’ accompanying family members must complete symptom screening before coming to an In-Person Activity (see below).
Staff, students, and students’ accompanying family members should practice regular handwashing.
Staff, students, and students’ accompanying family members should practice physical distancing where feasible.
Symptom Screening Requirement
Families and staff must conduct a screening of COVID-19 symptoms of students and accompanying family members. Do not register for or attend any In-Person Activity if an individual (e.g., staff member, student, accompanying family member) is experiencing any of the following symptoms within 10 days of the In-Person Activity:
- Fever of 100 degrees or higher
- (Persistent) cough
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Loss of taste or smell
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Muscle or body aches, fatigue
- Chills
- Vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, or abdominal pain
- Runny nose, congestion
If an individual has any of the above symptoms while at the In-Person Activity, they must return home and will not be permitted to participate.

Homeschooling Advice
Misunderstood: Embracing Wonderful and Wildly Unique Kiddos
Years ago, when my husband and I were newly engaged, I accompanied him at a large family gathering.
I’ve always been an introvert, and as much as I enjoyed meeting so many new faces, at one point I needed a little breather.
That’s how I found myself in the foyer, sitting on the bottom step of the entryway staircase, petting a large, friendly dog. After a few moments, a small figure appeared to my left.
“I’ve always preferred the company of children and dogs,” came a raspy voice with a thick Boston accent.
I looked up and locked eyes with one of my husband’s great aunts. We smiled, and an unspoken understanding passed between us.
I loved her immediately.

Congratulations to our OCSEF Finalists!
We would also like to congratulate our winners. Out of the hundreds of students that participated in the OCSEF competition from schools all over Orange County, three of our students won special recognition! Scroll down to read more about our amazing students, their world changing projects and the distinctions they earned.
For more details on our student's OCSEF science projects, click here.
Jason - 9th Grade
Distinction Earned: First Place
Project: The I See Headset: Providing Spatial Awareness for those Unable to See
Jason created a headset for people suffering with blindness or limited eyesight that can read, identify objects and sense surroundings and then relate that information verbally to the person wearing the headset. We are so excited by Jason's project! It seems the judges at OCSEF were too, since Jason got 1st place in his division! Jason will now go on to represent Cabrillo Point Academy at the state competition! Please join us in congratulating him and wishing him luck at the state competition!
Aria - 10th Grade
Distinction Earned: Honorable Mention
Project: From Brine to Beverage: Solar-Powered Salt Removal
Drought is an ongoing threat to Southern California. Using readily available ocean water and then desalinating it is a wonderful solution. This is the basis for Aria's science fair project. He even used a clean, accessible energy source: solar power. OCSEF awarded Honorable Mention to Aria's project! It should be noted that for Aria's division, he was the only student to get any sort of recognition. We're impressed too, Aria!
Sebastian - 7th Grade
Distinction Earned: Honorable Mention & Award from the Energy Coalition
Project: Corn Husk Boxes
Sebastian came up with a wonderful idea to use corn husks to replace cardboard boxes thereby reducing both pollution and deforestation. This innovative idea earned Sebastian Honorable Mention in his division! Sebastian also received an award from the Energy Coalition! Maybe he should get in touch with Amazon. Great job Sebastian!

Below are some tips and tricks they have for doing well on the test!
- Don’t over cram in preparation, and don’t stress too much.
- Use the vocabulary to get a sense of what material will be on the exam, study all topics that you are not yet comfortable with, stay calm and collected, and have confidence in yourself!
- Before the test, we went on a walk and had a special breakfast to make it feel like a special day instead of a day of pressure.
- Stay focused and don't stress.

Hi, I am a Mother of 4 sons, and grandma of 3 little ones. I learned about homeschooling about 5 years ago and I loved the whole concept. I homeschooled my youngest son and he loved it! I wish I had known this way of teaching when my other sons were little. I love helping families to thrive, and be successful! I am here to help you in any way I can.
