Sherwood Updates
Dear Sherwood Families,
Mark your calendars! To kick off the school year right the PTO is sponsoring assemblies in September to teach our students about the importance of cyber safety. Many of our children utilize social media or gaming platforms so it is important that we inform them how to use them safely.
In addition to the assemblies the PTO is sponsoring a Parents’ Night on September 14th at 7:30 pm. We encourage you to join us at Sherwood and learn about the ways we can help facilitate safe gaming and social media usage.
To coincide with Panda STARS, let’s help our students learn how they can be successful, respectful, technologically aware, and savvy internet users. It is important for them to “Shine Bright” online and in person!
The class with the highest parent attendance per grade level will win a PJ Day!!!

International Dot Day 9/15/22
Sherwood will join over 22 million educators and students around the world in celebrating International Dot Day on September 15th!
We will be celebrating with a dress-up/theme day: WEAR ANYTHING WITH DOTS!
Inspired by author/illustrator Peter H. Reynolds’ classic storybook for all ages The Dot, International Dot Day inspires young and old to embrace the power of personal creativity and courage to help make their mark on the world, and move it to a better place.
Students will also be participating in some fun Dot Day activities in Art and Library classes this week!
Sown to Grow - Social Emotional Check-in Tool
This week we implemented Sown to Grow, a weekly social emotional check-in tool being used throughout our district. Each week your child will answer a question using the Sown to Grow app so that they can share their current emotional well-being with their classroom teacher. Teachers provide all students feedback every week and check-in with students in more depth if necessary. Our social workers, school psychologist and administration also review the data provided by our students. This is a great tool to gather real-time understanding of student emotional well-being which allows us to build deeper connections with students and to foster a safe learning environment. If you would like to learn more about Sown to Grow, please feel free to check out their website: https://www.sowntogrow.com/

Sherwood Robotics Team Application 4th & 5th Grade
Thanks to the generous support of the 112 Education Foundation, this year we are having our annual robotics competition across District 112. Students in grades 4-8 are eligible to participate in each school’s robotics team. The goal of this program is to get students excited about science and technology through an annual challenge. Our robotics competition is modeled after FIRST LEGO League, but is not officially affiliated with the FLL program. This year’s theme is Welcome to “Beach Vacation!” Our robotics season begins in September and ends with a culminating tournament tentatively scheduled for December 17th. The tournament typically runs from 8am until 1pm. Please contact Alyssa Kodroff (akodroff@nssd112.org) if you have any questions.

Universal Social-Emotional Screener
As part of our continued efforts to ensure the whole child is supported, the District will be administering a Universal Social-Emotional Screener the week of September 12-16. The purpose of this screener is to provide data on where students could benefit from continued or additional support. This screener is not intended to serve as an evaluation of individual students. For students in grades K through 5 classroom teachers will complete the screener. For students in grade 3 through 8, students will also complete a self-screener.
Pursuant to Board Policy 6:65 this is in support of social-emotional learning standards. And pursuant to Board Policy 7:15, if you would like to opt your student out of the survey, please email Rachel Filippi (rfilippi@nssd112.org).
