Volunteer Appreciation Week
The Board recognized its two volunteer groups, the Parent Teacher Organization and the Learning Fund Foundation, at its meeting in honor of National Volunteer Week. “Our volunteers work countless hours supporting our staff, students, and community. The Learning Fund Foundation and the Parent Teacher Organization sponsor field trips, musical programs, supplies and equipment, volunteer in and out of the classroom, and support our students and staff through numerous programs,” said Superintendent Scott Warren. “We cherish our partnerships and would like to recognize the leadership of our volunteer organizations.”
Administrator and Classified Salaries
The Board approved classified salaries and administrator contracts for the 2022-2023 school year. Increases will average 3.5 percent for the 2022-2023 school year, which is consistent with Lake County school district raises.
Approval of Board Meeting Calendar
The Board approved its meeting calendar for the 2022-2023 school year, which is similar to past years' calendars.
Administrator Retirement Plan
The Board approved an Administrator Retirement Plan, which provides a stipend toward partial health insurance compensation for employees who have worked for the district at least 10 years.
Purchase of Real Estate Property
The Board approved the purchase of the property at 299 Olde Half Day Road, adjacent to Half Day School, for the price of $225,000. Discussion later in the meeting directed the administration to pursue necessary village permits to rezone the property, which will allow the district to utilize the property for future use.
D103 Learning Update
Dr. Warren shared that while there are COVID cases in the schools, the numbers remain low. The incident rate in the county is 21.1 cases per 100,000.
Preliminary Budget Update
Patrick Palbicke, Assistant Superintendent for Business, shared with the Board some of the expenses in the district budget for the 2022-2023 school year. Mr. Palbicke analyzes revenue against expenses in balancing the budget. The budget is backed primarily by property taxes with the largest expense being salaries and benefits.
Parent Teacher Conference Survey
A recent survey of parents and teachers resulted in almost 85 percent of parents and 98 percent of teachers supporting the option of offering remote/virtual parent teacher conferences in the future. Administration realizes that some parents would like the option of in-person parent teacher conferences. The administration will work on how best to accommodate both in-person and virtual conferences in the future.
Blue Ribbon Award
Daniel Wright has been nominated for the National Blue Ribbon Award. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. The application was submitted earlier this month. The district will hear in September 2022 if Daniel Wright receives the award.
Community Project Funding
A federal grant that would provide the district with partial funding to improve Riverwoods Road in front of Daniel Wright Junior High School is moving forward for further consideration. This improvement is necessary if further expansion of the school is ever needed. The grant requires state and local support to be considered for approval.
