Cultivating Critical and Creative Thinking in Responsive Learning Environments
Welcome back. I hope you all enjoyed a happy and healthy holiday with family and friends.
December was filled with many magical moments!
A big thank-you goes to our Parent Council volunteers and Julie Cameron and her culinary students from Bayridge SS for a delicious Christmas Dinner. It is wonderful to have such a dedicated group of parents!
Also, a huge thank-you to Crystal McCracken, who coordinated the Gift Room, and her team of volunteers. It was priceless to watch the excitement of students as they "shopped" for their loved ones!
Congratulations to all our students who were involved in Lights, Camera, Christmas performance! What a show! I was impressed with the enthusiasm and talent both on stage and behind the scenes! Part of the magic came from having top-notch sound and light equipment so thank you to Al Torrence for donating his time and equipment! I would also like to extend a congratulations to our tremendous staff for their teamwork and leadership. We are very lucky to have a staff with many talents they are willing to share! A special shout-out to Mr. Cahill, Mr. Nesbitt and retired teacher Mrs. Mangan for playing in the "band" and a very special thank you to Mrs. Diamond for her outstanding direction of the the whole show!!!
Progress Reports went home for students in Grades 1-8 just before the break. Please complete and return the bottom portion of the second page if you have not already to help your child set goals, provide comments and/or request to meet with your child's teacher.
We look forward to another busy and productive month of learning!
As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, concerns, or ideas you would like to share.
Sincerely,
Heather Campbell,
Principal

Keep the Conversation Going...
There is no better time for your child to learn new vocabulary than during his/her everyday conversations with you. Researchers have found that the more parents talk with their child, the more words the child learns. The key to building language competence is encouraging them to engage in conversations!
Here are some conversation tips:
- Give your child a chance to initiate so they have an interest in what you will talk about.
- Get face to face to notice expressions and body language that goes along with the words.
- Make a comment and wait for your child to take another turn. Keep it going back and forth.
- Follow up a comment with a genuine question.
- Be careful of these conversation stoppers:
- A one sided running commentary. Stop talking!
- Too many questions. (sounds like testing!)
