Bragg Street Academy
An Insider Look
Better Security
We had a wonderful week at Bragg Street and lots of progress is being made. One of our biggest changes this week was that youtube and distracting websites have been blocked. Although this came to a shock for many students, I hope you all are seeing a positive turn around in work being completed. Some students are still wanting to listen to music while working independently. Please keep in mind that we all agreed to allow this to happen. If you have some students that are struggling with finding music website, please seek out our students that have been successful in this endeavor. Many of our students use music to calm themselves and provide background noise. Continue to monitor student computers through Crostini. Mr. Williams has asked that we update him with any websites that need to be blocked. Miss. Sanders provided a googledoc that was shared with all of us. On Friday, I also sent out a google form for student email addressed. Mr. Wiliams also asked for this. He will use this to monitor the websites students are accessing.
Thank you to Ms. Roper for planning our Black History Month Program. This was a wonderful event filled with music, student leadership, and community partnerships.
Last week we also set the date for our incentive trip to the Boys and Girls Club. It is important that you remind your students about this event and the requirements on a daily basis. If you are excited about this, your students will also be excited. As you are reviewing your student's behavior, grades, and attendance progress, please make sure to complete the advisory sheets with your students. I will pick these up at the end of the quarter. Don't forget to embed make-up opportunities during the week. This is a non-negotiable that was discussed during our faculty meeting with flexibility in not having a unified late assignment grading process.
During our faculty meeting, you asked for me to access Edclick. I have contacted the company and I am still waiting for a callback. I will follow up again this week in hopes to have us up and running by Wednesday. I will need you to be patient with me as I will be new to this program and may have some questions along the way.
Great job during this month's fire drill on Monday. We were out in under 2 minutes, which is our goal! This week on Wednesday, we will have our statewide tornado drill. Some details are below, and a more comprehensive email will be sent before the drill. Please make sure you read all information and ask if you have questions.
Statewide Tornado Drill this week.... Be ready!
TORNADO DRILL/EVENT PROCEDURES
1. Tornado Watch (conditions are right for a tornado): A watch suggests that conditions are favorable for dangerous weather and damaging winds; we want teachers to simply be aware of the situation but take no action at this point.
-Teachers will be notified through the in-school message plan when a TORNADO WATCH is in effect (via Remind and email, door-to-door to checks).
-Students will not be informed of the possible danger.
2. Tornado Warning (tornado has been sighted): Should the National Weather Service issue a warning we will proceed with our tornado evacuation plan.
-We will announce “There is a tornado warning--this means a tornado has been sighted nearby and that you should go at once to your safety area.”
-Turn off all lights and close all doors as you proceed to designated areas.
-Once in designated areas, all students need to kneel on all fours facing the wall and cover their heads with their hands until the drill or emergency is over.
-Please remain as far away from outside glass doors as possible while still remaining in your designated area.
**If you see or hear a tornado, don’t wait for the warning signal. Go to your designated area and have your students assume the safety position (on your knees and elbows, face down, with your hands over the back of your head).
2019 School Social Work Week March 3-9, 2019
School social workers serve as a vital link between the students they serve and community resources. They are a voice for students that may not otherwise have advocates. Ms. Clark provides a service at Bragg Street Academy, in the community or through a home visit to best meet the needs of families. Let's show Ms. Clark throughout the week how LUCKY we are to have her at Bragg Street Academy.
