Colombian cuisine is very diverse and interesting. In some parts of Colombia you'll often see people enjoying roasted ants or guinea pigs but in other parts many people would find this repulsive. Colombia is not a recommended place for vegetarians because of all the meat they have to offer. Towards the coastal areas you'll see a wide variety of seafood including fish and lobster. Another thing that Colombia is plentiful with is coffee plants and bananas, in a matter of fact Colombia is one of the top largest coffee producers in the world. They are also known for their abundant variety of fresh fruits the have to offer and most of them you probably haven't heard of like fruits like chontaduro, uchuva, zapote, borojó, anon and much more. A typical dish you would see would be “Ajiaco” a potato based soup popular in Bogota Colombia's capital. Ajiaco also has chicken,capers, pieces of corn on the cob,and cream and is also served with Avocados and fresh rice. Another popular dish is Bandeja Paisa a traditional Antioquian dish that has of beef, pork or chicken, chorizo, pork fat, fried plantains, a fried egg, refried beans, rice, avocado, and a small salad and a fun fact about his dish is that it probably contains a month's worth of calories!

Well Known Chef

Ingrid Hoffmann is a 50 year-old chef from Barranquilla, Colombia. She hosts a show on Food Network called Simply Delicioso. She has also written a cookbook titled Simply Delicioso: A Collection of Everyday Recipes with a Latin Twist which hit store shelves in 2008. Her second cookbook, Latin D’lite, released in 2013. She writes in a column on People en Espanol to share her tips and recipes with the rest of the world. She says she began cooking from a young age with her mom, Yolanda, who was also a chef. She gives her mother credit for getting her interested in the culinary world. Ingrid lives in Miami, Florida with her boyfriend, dog and stepchildren where she films Simply Delicioso and appears on many other cooking shows.

There are many things to do in Colombia. Some popular attractions located here are places like The Amazon rain forest. 10% of the The Amazon Rainforest is in Colombia and Creates around 20% of the world's oxygen supply and also has half of the estimated insects and animals in the world. The Amazon Rainforest is typically tropical and is hot and humid. Another great place to visit in Columbia is the gold museum. The Gold museum displays many pre hispanic pieces of gold work and is also one of the biggest collection in the world. The museum is located in Bogotá, Colombia's capital.

The Zika virus, an illness contracted through mosquito bites, has been making it’s way through South America. Over the last several days and weeks, there have been over 20,000 reports of this virus. Colombia has recently blamed Zika for 9 deaths, 3 within the last 3 days. The other 6 are still under investigation but suspected to have something to do with the outbreak. The three deaths were caused by Guillain-Barre, a nerve disorder causing a person’s immune system to attack their nerves and ultimately shut down their bodies.
