Principal's Corner
This past Thursday, our eighth grade students kicked off our testing season and completed their FSA test of the year, Writing. The testing session ran very smooth and 169 out of 151 sat on Day 1 – great attendance! This Tuesday, our fourth through seventh grade students will follow and complete their FSA writing test. Please ensure students are rested, fed, and on time for their session!
I wish you all a wonderful and safe week.
In The Spotlight: Ms. Forero
This week, we hear from our Computer Applications teacher, who educates all of our seventh grade scholars.
When and why did you decide to become a teacher? My kindergarten yearbook quotes me telling the teacher I wanted to become an elementary teacher. When I started college, I was studying dance because I planned to open up a dance studio and teach what I love. After a horrible car accident, my mind set changed because of what doctors told me. I eventually changed my degree for elementary education but became discouraged during the recession by other teachers while completing internship hours at local public schools. I then switched my degree once again and dived into a program I knew nothing about, information technology. Once I noticed I was in a field employed of mostly men, who also lacked social skills, I knew it would be a challenge to land a job. I went to every interview and was literally judged by my pink shirt or cute purse, at least that is what it felt like. After working in human resources, legal assisting, pro cheerleading, personal training, and even flight attending, I realized I simply enjoyed being a part of my community and helping others. I knew I had to go back to teaching. Franklin Academy Sunrise gave me that opportunity by being a substitute; I fell in love with the students.
If you were not a teacher, what would you be? This is kind of a funny question, people always laugh or make strange faces at my answer. I would either own a goat farm or go into horticulture. I’m actually dying to go try a goat yoga class and I currently plant my own succulents.
What’s your favorite part of being a teacher? My scholars are the best part of my job. They always find a way to make me smile and they always encourage me to be my best. They are not just my motivation but they have taught me to believe in my dreams again.
What is the best tip you can give to a middle school student who wants to have a successful experience as a student at Franklin Academy?
The best advice I can give is be yourself and be your age! When I was in middle school, at West Pine Middle, I wasn’t exactly what was considered “cool”. My hair was frizzy, all I cared about was dancing, and I needed braces only because other kids said so. I didn’t hang out with the “cool kids”, I simply always listened to my parents and made them proud even if I just did average at times. I had friends and we had fun simply following the rules and being our age. There was no social media! I know that has definitely changed the way we all think but you have to try hard to stay grounded to who you are. Don’t be a follower!
What is your favorite memory at Franklin Academy? There are so many memories I love since starting at Franklin Academy, this is a hard question for me. I’ll list five favorites. My first favorite would be my first day at Franklin Academy, Mr. Simone was the first person to say hi to me. My second favorite, is when I drew an alligator on the board for a third grade class and the girls started calling me Ms. Fancy for some random reason. The third was when Mrs. Nadal informed me that I should apply to be a teacher at the school. My fourth favorite, the first time I stepped into my computer lab, my room was empty and I felt overwhelmed. I had no idea where to start and no one had any advice because no one really understands how to teach my subject. My fifth just happened this past Thursday, the 8th graders thanked me for preparing them when they had me for 7th grade; it was the greatest feeling.
Around Franklin...
Our Fifth grade students from Mr. Council's Social Studies class, completed amazing projects during the month of February. These projects helped us all learn a great deal about some of the most influential people in our nation. Thank you Mr. Council and students!
Last Thursday, our MYP Boys Flag Football Team became Division Champions by defeating Ramblewood Middle with a score of 20-7. The team, led by Coach Leonardo, finished the division games undefeated (6-0). Way to go, Chargers!!!!
Our first playoff game is next Wednesday March, 7th at 4:15 PM at the Sunrise Athletic Complex. Hope to see you all there!
This past week, we treated those students in grades fourth and fifth who earned a 7 or above on the last Franklin Writes, an assignment our students complete to ensure they are ready for the FSA Writing test.
our sun-risers of the week
Parents: This week we want to thank Ms. Angela Tucker and Mr. Frank Suarez, both parents of students on our flag football teams. They volunteer every single game to help our teams in any possible way, from carrying our students' backpacks to helping with refreshments.
Staff Members: A big thank you to Mr. Lucas, Ms. Pedrone and Ms. Fernandez for volunteering to accompany our sixth graders on their field trip to Bone Valley.
Students: Our Boys Flag Football Team, led by Coach Leonardo, have had an amazing season so far, and led by example both on and off the field! Already division champs, we can’t wait to watch how the season continues.
Community: Build a Field Trip has provided our students amazing experiences for the last three years. Bone Valley, St. Augustine and Sanibel Island are just some examples of educational field trips they have taken us on.
