From Mr. Lucita

As we wrap up one week we look forward to another! Let’s celebrate this past week's successes, and boy was there plenty to celebrate! Let’s start with the Granger HS Football game. It was definitely an adventure on a Friday night. Much traffic due to ACL caused us to arrive to the game after it had already started and after a few quick conversations with the Granger HS Principal and Band Director it was agreed upon that both bands would perform post-game! What a great experience for everyone! As the band finished their postgame performance they were met with high fives from the granger football team and countless accolades from the parents and audience in attendance. They were all so appreciative that we stayed to perform for them and to share our music and a glimpse of our journey! We were also able to watch their band perform their halftime show as well as play a song together with them. In the process, our students made many new friends and numerous memories that will last a lifetime.

After a late-night arrival back at Johnson, our dedicated Jaguar Band students arrived at JHS for a run through early the next morning. After a quick lunch, we headed to the Vista Ridge Marching Contest where our Jag Band had another successful performance. Our Johnson Jaguar Band placed second in the 4A division by just a couple of points short of being 1st, and also took home the awards for outstanding Percussion and Color Guard! This was a great accomplishment within itself. However, it is important to acknowledge that our Jaguar Percussion finished in 6th place and our Jaguar Color Guard finished 5th! This was out of all 4A, 5A and 6A Bands! There were a total of 26 bands at this festival and our students' accomplishments shine extra bright when put into perspective!! An EXTRA shout out goes to these two groups for their success!

We also want to acknowledge the time, effort and sweat that our parents have put in with uniforms, meals, and props!! We cannot be successful without these key components! Thank you so much to these dedicated parents! If you have not already volunteered please get involved and help us reach even greater heights!

This week we have a home football game against Hays HS on Thursday and we head to the Central Texas Marching Classic on Saturday where we see one of the toughest lineups in the state of Texas! We have a lot of work to do with continuing to improve our execution of what we already know and also adding the remaining portions of the 2019-2020 production of “Our Journey”!!

Here we go! Let’s have an awesome week of rehearsal and performances.

Calling ALL Jaguar Band Families!

WE NEED YOU!

Pit Crew needs your help! You do not have to commit to all games and/or competitions - you can sign up for as many or as few as you are available for. We have an amazing show and need help loading/unloading trailer and setting up equipment and props on the field. At competitions, this needs to be done in a certain time frame so the more help we have, the better! No experience is necessary!

If you signed up before, please check again! We have added the HaysCISD Marching Festival on Oct. 23rd!

If you are interested in helping on the Pit Crew, please sign up at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0848ABA62CA57-proppit or contact pitcrew@johnsonbands.com or text/call Clover Clamons at 512-468-8319.

Mum Guidelines

Please note that Mums MAY NOT be pinned to band uniforms. Pins can damage the uniforms. Garters can be worn (they are not typically pinned).

Please help your student with SHOW HAIR

Show hair is REQUIRED for all students.

** It is highly recommended that you assist your student with his/her hair before he/she arrives at the band hall (ready for inspection). If your student needs help with hair, they must bring their own products (comb, gel, bobby pins, bun makers, bun hair nets, etc.) and arrive in the hair room (library) no later than 15 minutes before inspection.

Show hair guidelines:

Hair needs to be in a bun, braids, or neatly pinned up. This is for ALL hair length, even those with shorter hair must have their hair up and back. Be sure to wet hair, use gel, a comb and bobby pins. We also recommend donut bun makers and bun hair nets to keep buns in place. The BOYS that have a regular length haircut simply need to apply some product (gel, spray, etc.) in an effort to keep it styled and neat. Those with long hair will need to pull it up and back. In an email sent on 9/16 through Charms there were 3 video examples of show hair (this was email with show hair info and info about Seguin game).

Questions About Upcoming Marching Festivals?

Make sure to sync your calendar with Charms and watch out for Charms emails from Tracye Mendez! Detailed schedules for competition days will be provided by the directors during the week before the competition.

Below is the schedule for this weeks competition: Texas Marching Classic. Johnson Jaguar Band performs at 12:15. Competition is at Kelly Reeves Stadium (same place as BOA Austin)

Game Day AND Competition Day Meals

THANK YOU to the volunteers who helped with game day and Vista Ridge meals last week!

Please know that on competition days we serve the students lunch and dinner. So we need help to serve meals TWICE on those days. If you sign up for meal plans, please do not also sign up for Pit Crew.

If you don't have a background check filed with Hays as a volunteer, please click below to get it started. The times are subject to change as I figure out when the kids need to be fed.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Helpful and Important Reminders For Game and Competition Days (UPDATED, PLEASE READ)

  • SUMMER UNIFORM: Black band polo, khaki shorts, black belt, short socks, cap, band shoes.
  • FULL UNIFORM: Black compression shorts, black band dri-fit, tall black socks, band shoes.
  • ALL uniform pieces are REQUIRED.
  • Please note that different socks are required for Summer vs Full uniform.
  • Always pack/store uniform parts back in ONE bag so that it is ready for the next game or competition
  • Please see above regarding "show hair".
  • Students should pack (and be encouraged to use) deodorant. Game days are long and hot!
  • Label caps, shoes (initials on the label on the inside of shoes), shirts, shorts, belts (anything they are changing in to and out of). If we find these items we have no way of knowing who to return them to. With so many kids changing and carrying their clothes around, stuff inevitably gets dropped or left behind. Paint pens (these come in all colors including silver or gold which can be seen on black) or Sharpie laundry markers work best for this. Any other pen or marker will rub off.
