Beef Superintendents
Quality Assurance Requirements
In person courses will be:
- May 25 6:00 p.m. at the Fair Center
- June 7 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. at the Fair Center
- June 7 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. at the Fair Center
Ownership and Identification
Proof of ownership (by completing the appropriate ID sheet and turning it into the Extension Office) in the 4-H & FFA division must be established by the following methods and dates:
- Beef - Bucket Calf: EID Ear Tag (June 15) ID Sheet
- Beef - Breeding: Ear Tag or Tattoo (June 15) ID Sheet
- Beef - Feeder Calves: EID Ear Tag (June 15) ID Sheet
- Beef - Market: EID Tags with photo of entire head & EID tag visible (June 15) ID Sheet
NOTE: Beef members must designate by June 15 no more than ten animals per member from which to select their county fair entries. 4-H and FFA members must designate specific animals to be shown in all livestock classes when making entries on July 12.

At entry time, (July 12, 2021) each 4-H member of a family holding their animals in joint ownership must designate on the entry sheet which animal(s) he or she plans to show. Livestock divisions in which a 4-H and FFA member may enter:
- (1) Beef - Bucket Calf
- (1) Beef - Bucket Calf + 1
- (3) Beef - Feeder Calves
- (3) Beef - Breeding
- (3) Beef – Market
Fair Entry Sheets Due July 12
All Animals coming to fair must complete an entry sheet. Entry sheets for each species can be found at https://extension.unl.edu/statewide/otoe/4h/
*NEW* Jr Breeding Heifer Calves Class
With the recent changes made to the 2021 Nebraska State Fair 4-H Livestock shows, we have made changes to the Otoe County 4-H Beef show. Listed below are the changes we will be incorporating going forward.
Beef
Division 31 - Feeder Calves
CLASS NUMBER:
G1. Feeder Calves – market heifers
G2. Feeder Calves – market steers or bulls
G3. Jr. Breeding Heifer Calves (born between January 2021 and April 2021)
*Entries may be market heifer, steer or bull calves born between September 1, 2020 and April 30, 2021. Jr. Breeding Heifers should be born between January 1, 2021 and April 30, 2021.
No Rate of Gain for 2021
Exhibitors are responsible for picking up tags from the Extension Office and tagging their own animals for 2021. This year only - a photo must accompany the ID sheet that shows the entire calf head and a visible EID tag.

- 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. 4-H & FFA Market Beef weigh-in (Check-in for Breeding & all 4-H & Clover Kid Bucket Calves weigh-in & stalled)
- 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. Enter 4-H & FFA Stocker Feeders
- 10:00 a.m. FFA Beef Show – Kimmel Event Center Arena
- 11:30 a.m. 4-H Clover Kid Bucket Calf Show – Kimmel Event Center Arena
- 12:30 p.m. 4-H Beef Show – Kimmel Event Center Arena
- 3:30 p.m. (following Wood Carving Auction) 4-H & FFA Livestock Sale – Kimmel Event Center Arena
- 4:00 p.m. Release of all Livestock NOT in Sale – Horses (Stalls must be cleaned), Beef, Hogs, Sheep, & Goats
Beef Rules
1. Entries must be an orphan or newborn calf; male or female; dairy, beef or cross, fed on bucket or bottle. These calves must be born after January 1 and before May 1 of project year and must be ear tagged by June 15.
2. They can show only one entry per class.
3. Clover Kid Bucket Calves must be under 350 pounds on entry day.
BEEF – BUCKET CALF +1:
1. Entries must be a bucket calf; male or female; exhibited in the Bucket Calf project in the prior year.
2. 4-H members can show only one entry per class.
3. Bucket Calf +1 must be identified with an EID tag and photo of the entire head and ear with ear tag visible by June 15.
BEEF - BREEDING BEEF:
1. Breeding heifers must have either a legible tattoo or an EID tag.
2. Calfhood vaccination tattoos are not acceptable for identification.
3. To determine the Grand Champion heifer, the top two purple calves in each breed will be judged. The order of placing the top calves shall not be reversed.
BEEF - FEEDER CALVES:
1. Entries may be market heifer, steer or bull calves born between September 1, 2020 and April 30, 2021. Must be progeny of breeding project animal. Will be shown by breeds, if at least five are representatives of the particular breed entered.
2. Jr. Breeding Heifers should be born between January 1, 2021 and April 30, 2021.
3. A champion and reserve champion will be selected in each of the junior breeding heifer, male and female feeder calf classes.
BEEF - MARKET BEEF:
1. Market Beef must be identified with an EID tag and photo of the entire head and ear with ear tag visible by June 15.
2. Market animals may have the two center permanent incisor teeth. The remaining six temporary incisors must be in place.
3. Classification will be according to weight within the breed classes. The Beef Superintendents will determine the weight range for each class.
4. To determine the Grand Champion steer and heifer, the top two purple calves in each breed will be judged. The order of placing the top calves shall not be reversed.
5. Calves cannot be shown in both market and breeding classes.
6. All market beef animals must be dehorned.
7. Grand Champion Steer or Heifer must be of purple ribbon quality.
8. Animals not showing pre-dominate breed characteristics of a breed for which no class is set up will be shown in a special class for crossbreds. The Ag Society or their duly appointed representatives will make this determination. Angus cattle with horn spurs will show in crossbred classes.
Showmanship Rules
Dress Code
Grooming of Livestock
Preparation and grooming of an animal should be the primary responsibility of the Otoe County Fair exhibitor, however, assistance may be provided by other Otoe County Fair 4-H or FFA exhibitors and/or family members, legal guardian of the exhibitor, and leaders.
The 4-H Beef Shows including Showmanship, Market Beef and Breeding Beef will be Blow and Go. Guidelines for Blow and Go are found on page 7 of the Otoe County Fairbook.
Stalling and Release
Producing dairy goats and stocker-feeder calves may leave immediately after their show. Any other exhibits taken before specified release time will forfeit premium money.

Clover Kid Bucket Calves
Clover Kid Bucket calves must be no more than six (6) months of age and weigh no more than 350 pounds. This is a county, state and national 4-H rule. A halter must be used and Clover Kids must be accompanied in the show ring by an older 4-H member or adult over the age of 14

State Fair Nominations due by June 15
Beef nominations for the 2021 State Fair must be submitted online via Show Stock Manager at https://showstockmgr.com by June 15.
