Pleasant Street School News
building a community of learners that strive for excellence
Want to be involved in your child's school?
There are many ways families can be part of, and lend support to, our Athol Royalston community schools. At Pleasant Street we are always happy to have school volunteers and have teamed up with the Hands Across North Quabbin group to assist in developing a volunteer program. The most successful volunteer programs not only screen applicants (CORI check) but provide training and support to match interests and talents of volunteers with needs within organizations. If you are interested in learning more about volunteering please send a note or call the school.

September reminders!
- Summer Reading and Math Activity Packets We are asking that these are turned in no later than Friday, Sept. 19, 2014. We will be recognizing children at a September all school meeting. Many thanks to families for supporting their children's learning over the summer.
- Share Your Summer Learning Stories We invite you to share some magical moments you had with your children learning this summer. Please send us a note and digital picture, if you can, and we will include some of these in upcoming editions of our Pleasant Street School News.
- All School Expectations Please take a moment to look over and review with your child our all school expectations teaching matrix that is attached below. We have begun teaching these expectations of respect for self, others, and property and what that looks like in various school settings. Please take time to review this with your child and refer back to it on occasion. Thank you.
Welcome Kindergarten!
We are so pleased to welcome our new kindergarten students. They really are so adorable! It was a bit hot in the building this past week but we had busy days learning about each other, our classrooms, and our school routines. Pictured below is a pattern block activity from Mrs. Goldthwaite's class and literacy center activities from Mrs. Webb's class. Also pictured are kindergarten folders that families should look for each night with important information and news.
We are Launching!! Readers Workshop in Action
Reading workshop is an instruction model that focuses on the strengths and needs of each individual reader. Teachers model reading behaviors and provide direct instruction on reading strategically. Students are given time to read, an opportunity to choose their reading selections, and time to talk about books and strategies

Nurse notes!
We are pleased to tell you that our school nurse, Mrs. Liddy, is already letting her presence be known. While she will continue to call home with any big concerns or if there is any injury or significant illness, she has also created nurse notes to send home for any child who visits her office. Please look for these notes to be in your child's agenda or school folder. These notes are used to improve communication with families over quick visits that the school would not typically call home over.
Ways We Get to School :)
Students in Mrs. Jones class wrote out and graphed their school transportation arrangements.
