Happy New Year!

Hi Everyone!!

I am so excited to see you all on Monday! I hope your break was relaxing and peaceful. Most of my time was spent with family hanging out at home. Cameron and Kas are planning their wedding. As a family we are thinking about a trip to Spain next summer to see the family. I hope your time away was enjoyable!

Reflection is what I do a lot of when I am not caught up in the day to day. This break gave me some time to think about some of the things I need to as a leader and educator. For the last four years I/we have been focused on improving literacy through new curriculum and PD. We decided to invest in the teaching staff by offering professional development. To this end we have found teachers willing to support the learning of the group, in addition to Teachers College professional development opportunities. I BELIEVE IN YOU and your skills as educators, therefore investing in you is the right thing to do! I need to do a better job at appreciating and recognizing that hard work!

I recognize that there are several areas that I need to get better at as a principal. The 12 Days the Holidays made me realize that we need to celebrate more. This break I read a lot about student behavior and school culture. Relationships and listening to children is key to supporting children in our classrooms. Special Education is another area I am focusing on as well.

Maite's 2019 Goals:

1. Celebrate more - bring back FUN! Once a month some kind of staff appreciation! January is BINGO and Smoothie Bar! I am open to suggestions for upcoming months!

2. Work on supporting staff and students with behavior, by sharing some of the literature with staff regarding school and classroom supports for students.

3. Strengthening support for special education students by taking a greater role in monitoring goals and intervention support. I have a document I started that i will share with all of you soon.

I hope these goals will provide you with greater support. My job is to help you so you can help our students! I have always believed that and designed my leadership in that way.

Happy New Year! It's great to be a Mustang!!

much love and appreciation, maite

What If Everything You Knew About Disciplining Kids Was Wrong?

This is a link to an article about student behavior. I think we use many of the strategies the article suggests. It is a good reminder. I have used many of the ineffective strategies one the years. Particularly the one quoted below.

Is giving him a consequence—suspending him, calling his grandparents—is that going to teach him not to throw chairs?” she asks. “When you start doing all these consequences, they’re going to dig their heels in even deeper, and nobody is going to win.”

AMAZING READ!

Anyone interested in reading this book.. let me know. I will purchase it for you! This book provides some practical application to the article about discipline. Cornelius Minor is a TC staff developer and a middle school English teacher. Is style, format and text features make this a quick read.

Staff BINGO - DON'T USE THIS BOARD I CHANGED SOME THINGS! This is an example only.

You will get a board at school. We might try this a couple of different ways!

1. Keep your individual sheet

2. Make it public and place a giant bingo board in the staff room.

3. maybe both?!
