MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
I hope this message finds you doing well after an enjoyable spring break. It was great to have our students back at Fairview on Monday. Our staff has hit the ground running this week as we head into the final two months of the school year. We have many activities and events planned for the weeks ahead that we are looking forward to. Please take a few minutes to read below to stay informed on all we have coming up. Also, if you have a moment, our Media Club is back up and running once again. Click here for this past week’s edition of the FES News. Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Dan Ophus
Fairview Principal
The Cereal Effect: We are excited to announce a new service project we have coming up at Fairview starting on Monday called “The Cereal Effect.” The Mount Prospect Food Pantry has notified us that, at this time of year, they often see a slowdown in food donations for families in our community who are in need of food. One of the items that they need most is cereal. Students are encouraged to bring in cereal boxes to support families in our community. This is a great way to show others that kindness matters at Fairview School. There are two reasons why we are calling this project “The Cereal Effect.” The first is because this project will have a positive effect on people in our community. If each class gathers 20 boxes, we will be able to donate 460 boxes to give to people in need, which would account for a total of approximately 3,680 meals. The second reason relates to a fun activity we have planned that we will share with students on Monday. This collection will begin on Monday, April 10th, and end on Thursday, April 20th. Click here for the flyer that went home with students earlier this week. We hope you are able to participate!
Safety Reminder: At Fairview, we follow an established procedure when parents and visitors would like to enter the building. In the interest of safety, if you have been allowed entry into the building by one of our front office staff members, please do not let other people enter behind you. While it may seem rude not to let them in, for safety reasons, we would like all visitors to follow the same guidelines of first speaking to a front office staff member prior to being allowed to enter the front vestibule. Thank you for your help!
PTO Plant Sale: At the PTO meeting on Monday, the deadline to purchase plants from the PTO Plant Sale was extended to Monday, April 10th. Take some time this weekend to order some plants for your home or garden using this form. The pickup date is on Saturday, May 13th between 10 am and noon, just in time for Mother’s Day! Payment is due via cash or check payable to Fairview PTO on April 12th.
Capannari’s Coolest School Contest: The annual Capannari’s Coolest School Contest has begun. Schools across Mt. Prospect and in other neighboring towns each are assigned a day where 10% of all proceeds are given directly back to the school. For Fairview, mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 25th from 3:00-9:00 pm to stop by Capannari’s for some ice cream. Fairview staff will be helping as “celebrity scoopers” from 3:30-6:00 pm for the first time since before the pandemic. I’ll send the list of celebrity scoopers next week so you know who you can expect to see when you arrive. Click here for more information.
Student Council Movie Night: On Thursday, April 13th starting at 6:00 pm, we will be hosting our Fairview Student Council Movie Night! This event is open to students in grades 2-5 and their families. Space is limited, so be sure to sign up by the end of the day today using this form if you are interested. Once we reach our capacity for the event, the form will be closed. We will be showing the PG-rated film, Turning Red, in the Fairview gym. The cost is free, however, the student council will be collecting cereal boxes to donate to the Mt. Prospect food pantry for admission. Concessions will be sold during the duration of the movie and proceeds from these sales will benefit the Student Council. We hope to see you there!
Social Media Parent Presentation at Lincoln Middle School: One of the challenges we face as parents today is knowing how to best help our children navigate the complexities of social media. We encourage parents to attend a parent education event about this topic at Lincoln Middle School on April 13th at 7:00 pm. For more information about this event, click on this link. To register to attend, please fill out this form.
Disability Awareness Week T-Shirts: During the week of April 24th, District 57 will participate in Disability Awareness Week. We will share more information about this week in the weeks ahead, but if you are interested in purchasing a shirt for your child to wear during this week, you can do so using the information found at this link no later than today, April 6th. Special thanks to Fairview Special Education teacher, Katianne Olson, for her leadership in planning for this week.
Please contact Julie Manis (jmanis@d57.org) or Cindy Buell (cbuell@d57.org) if you need assistance with language translation of any of the flyers that appear in the newsletter.
