Principal's Message
This time last year, all of our winter festivities and end of (calendar) year celebrations were cancelled due to inclement weather. This year, we've been able to celebrate together in fine form. However, as the east winds have been acting up and the mountains are covered in snow, it is a strong reminder that winter weather is near. Recently, the district shared information about how to get weather updates. Please read below and note that if you would like to receive text messages you have to opt in by following the steps below.
Weather Message from Portland Public Schools
With winter quickly approaching and memories of last year’s snow deluge still fresh, it’s a good time for a refresher on how Portland Public Schools lets families know when weather forces delays and closures.
There are three ways we send messages to families about delays, closures and other weather-related decisions:
Phone calls: Automated calls, in all supported languages, will be placed to the primary number listed on each student’s registration. If you’ve changed your number recently, please update it with your school.
Email: An automated message will be sent to the email address you listed in your child’s registration.
Text message: You will receive a text message on your cell phone, but first you’ll have to opt in to the SchoolMessenger system by texting “Yes” or just “Y” to 68453 (see the attached video). Note: If you opt in, you will still receive an auto-dialer call, so sorry if you’re someone who hates that.
There are also three places PPS posts updates:
Twitter: Follow our account, @PPSConnect.
Facebook: Connect with us at www.facebook.com/pps.homepage.
PPS website: Go to pps.net and look for a yellow bar across the top of the page. That’s where you’ll find more detailed information, such as snow routes for buses.
I hope all of you have a wondrous winter holiday and are able to find time to celebrate with loved ones near or far!

Counselor's Corner: Gratitude
Last week I taught a lesson on gratitude to Ms. Schaedig’s fourth grade class. I asked the students to sit quietly and to think of three things that they feel grateful for. I then asked them to imagine they were surrounded by the things/people/animals for whom they feel gratitude and to notice how they feel.
After the quiet mindfulness moment, we had a class discussion. One student commented, “I feel guilty because I have so much and there are other people who have so little. It made it hard to feel grateful.” As a class we talked about the meaning of gratitude and that it is not simply being thankful for what we have but also knowing and appreciating our own good fortune.
May the holidays be a nourishing time with your families and as the calendar turns back toward the light, I hope that everyone in our Chapman community feels the warmth and brightness of this festive season.
Join me for Mindfulness for Parents on December 17 after Roundup. We will be focusing on gratitude.
Best,

Auction Volunteers
Chapman's annual auction, the school's biggest fundraiser of the year, is right around the corner. On Saturday March 10th, we will be transported to NOLA to celebrate Mardi Gras swift style. It takes a lot of manpower to put on a successful auction & gala...WE NEED YOUR HELP!
The most pressing need is recruiting a procurement team that can reach out to friends, family, local businesses etc. for donations. Please consider helping out with this important task! If you have any questions please contact Janel Hansen (janelmartinez@msn.com) or Brenda Olbeter (bolbeter@gmail.com) procurement co-chairs.
If procurement is not up your alley but you would like to help out with other aspects of the auction please sign up to volunteer and indicate general help and we will find a role for you.
