Teacher Talk
Every new year, I think of one word to help focus my energy and time. My word for 2018 is CHANGE. When I looked up the definition, the first one I read stated: to change the emphasis, direction, or focus. "Yes, I need to do that more!" I thought to myself.
Then I read this archaic definition in the same area: an ingenious or devious device or stratagem.
Well, it appears that CHANGE had me written all over it! I was hooked.
I'm attempting to change a few things here and there.
Some days are awesome and others are not so much. I realized that in the frenzy of snow and ice days last week that I never sent out this newsletter.
I guess no matter how hard I try, some things never change.

Thank you so much.
Concepts We'll Study:
Students are working on main idea, summary, and *FQR pathways using literary nonfiction. These skills all connect together to help everyone comprehend better when it comes to answering and asking questions while reading.
*FQR stands for Facts/Questions/Responses while reading. It's a strategy to show students how to map their thinking while reading. Most students do this internally as they are reading but we want them to slow down and be more aware.
Science:
We had our DCA on Earth's Forces and it happened on the same day as the earthquake in Alaska. Talk about timing!
Our next unit is all about weather and how it affects where people live and how we can notice patterns. We'll be observing, measuring, recording and comparing day to day weather changes in different locations. We'll be checking air temperature, wind direction and precipitation.
Social Studies:
We are reading autobiographies and biographies of people's lives.
Math:
We are completing our study of geometry by finding the area of composite shapes and looking at 3D shapes. Your children are quite good at figuring the area of a shape using multiplication!!
