SCCS Parents:

Some positive news to share with you!

At the beginning of the year, we do reading assessments with all students. We’ve recently completed our second round of assessments, which helps us to analyze progress.

Here are the results:

  • For K, the median student score is above the average score for fluency.
  • For grade 1, 78% of our students are at or above average.
  • For grades 2-8, the average growth per student is 1.4 GE, which means that in about 2.5 months, students have improved their reading, on average, by 1.4 years.

Of course, these assessments are one source of information. They're not the be-all and end-all, but the results are exciting to us and something to celebrate!

Thank you, parents, for your support of reading at home and for reading with your children. One of the best things you can do is read together. Thank you!

With you,

  • Please check the online calendar for upcoming events (
  • There will be no school on Nov. 25-27 for the Thanksgiving Break. The school office will be closed Wednesday-Friday. The TRIP Office will be open on Wednesday from 8:00-1:00 and closed Thursday and Friday.
  • Is your child missing a jacket or sweatshirt? How about gloves? The Lost and Found Table is full so check it out to see if anything belongs to you. Thanks!

Thank you for communicating when your child will be out, due to illness, quarantine, or a vacation/family event. Our teachers have been doing their best keeping up with preparing and sending work home when students are out due to illness or quarantine. If your child will be out for a vacation or family event, please do not ask the teachers to prepare work ahead of time for your child to take along. We will do our best to send work that is already prepared with your child and will get them caught up when they return.

We will be using the Remind system again for our weather alerts so that you can receive a text. We will also be posting on Bloomz.

If you would like to sign up to receive a text alert, please text the information below (depending on your last name) to 81010. We need to be a little creative to still use the free account. 😊

It's that time of year again - time to nominate trustees for the board of trustees!

The process starts with our constituents making nominations. Any member of the SCCS society (supporters, parents, grandparents, employees, etc.) can make nominations. Thank you for your participation!

There are 2 trustees retiring this year, so 2 are needed to replace them.

To learn more about the process, the requirements that need to be met to be a trustee, and the characteristics the board is seeking, head to the link below.

Nominations are accepted through November 30.

Parents, we’re excited to share that trustees will once again be making contact with each family starting now until January, just like they did last spring. We look forward to sharing updates with you regarding what’s happening at school, and we also plan to ask you how things are going for your children. Trustees will be calling parents to connect and ask for feedback. One item that the board is current investigating is including Spanish language as part of the educational offerings at SCCS. What is being considered is NOT an immersion program or a twice-a-week Spanish class. What the board is considering is a model that students would learn a content area (such as social studies) through being co-taught the content from a classroom teacher and the Spanish language from a Spanish-speaking teacher. All students would have access to this learning on a regular basis (starting in lower grades and building up). The board is interested in knowing if parents are interested in moving forward with this offering, as there are costs and logistics involved, and will be asking your thoughts when they call. We look forward to connecting with you!

  • Dishwasher volunteers needed: We could use more dishwashers to help out in the kitchen from 11:15-1:00 each day. If you would like to help out you can sign up here. If you have questions, contact Carmen Mulder (
  • You can find the lunch and dishwashing schedule here.

Sioux Center Christian School is excited to be the recipient of $32,500 from the Sioux Rivers MHDS COVID-19 Relief Funds grant!

We believe in caring for and supporting the whole person and have been working diligently to provide supports for social, mental, and emotional health as well as physical health during the CO19 pandemic. Often forgotten is the corresponding mental health pandemic occurring alongside the physical health pandemic. We’re thrilled to have funding to continue to support our whole-person efforts.

Funding will be used for the following activities, all related to mitigating the mental health effects of COVID-19:

Supplies for students in grades 5-8 to participate in art therapy sessions

Supplies for faculty and staff to participate in art therapy sessions

  • A guest speaker for teachers
  • Professional development and training for teachers
  • Classroom materials
  • Stipends for teachers as they implement Trailblazer Time
  • Materials for Trailblazer Time

What’s Trailblazer Time? This is intentional time built into the school day to build relationships and establish a classroom culture in order to invite students into God’s Story. The goal is to welcome students into a safe, friendly environment that allows them to be valued, seen, and heard each day as they learn and interact with others. Trailblazer Time will empower students to identify and communicate their emotional and social needs and care for one another. Teachers have organized their schedules to provide for Trailblazer Time at the beginning, middle, and end of each day, and part of the grant will support their work and will provide continued training and materials.

Thank you to Mrs. Jill Van Soelen, Mrs. Rachel Vanden Hull, Mrs. Emily Penner, and Mrs. Lisa Mouw for leading these efforts and to Sioux Rivers MHDS for this grant!

We are thankful for the partnership we have with Sioux Center Health. We have created a satellite clinic partnership that allows our students and employees to have same-day virtual doctor visits if a visit is recommended by the nurse. Check out the article here to learn more about this virtual option that is available. If you have questions, contact Nurse Stacy.
