CDS Phoenix Rising
Cheongna Dalton High School's Weekly Newsletter
November 30th, 2019
From The Assistant Director
CDS Community,
On behalf of our staff I would like to wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving break. As I walk through the halls every day, observe classes, and meet with students, parents, and teachers, I am regularly filled with gratitude. Thanks to everyone for all of your hard work, respect, and thoughtful participation. Your contributions are vital to our community!
This past week was filled with activity. The 9th and 10th graders attended a lecture given by Mrs. Soojeong Kim, a teacher from Inha University and a Dalton parent. We hosted ICSU in basketball and were delighted to walk away with a win for both the boys and girls squads! Students heading to Thailand to do service learning with Rustic Pathways held their final meeting before they board the plane in January. Korean History students had a field trip to the Seodaemun Prison to get insight into the Japanese colonial era.
I hope that everyone can thoroughly take advantage of this long three and a half day weekend. Students have been working very hard and deserve some time to relax and catch their breath. On the other side of this break awaits the final two weeks of the term, including our mid-year exams. The final two weeks of any term are often filled with stress, so it is important to balance work with self-care (sleep, relaxing non-school related activities, time with friends, etc.) in order to perform optimally and remain healthy. I don't believe it’s necessary to ask our students to work hard; they always do. I feel that it is my responsibility to ask our students to slow down, take a breath, and relax, especially in these stressful times.
All the best,
Mr. Jason Musselman
Assistant High School Director

Science Fair In Review
"Last week CDS students participated in the annual science fair which was split over two days for middle and high school. This year's event saw the return of many participants from last year as well as some new welcome additions to the contest. It was very evident that a large amount of work was put into the projects as the teachers were impressed by the quality and range of projects presented. The science teachers would like to thank everyone who took part and made the event a great success. This year's science fair truly highlighted how scientifically curious our students are in their desire to learn more.

Differential Calculus in Real Life
"With revision for the upcoming exams in full swing, the Calculus classes were able to apply their knowledge of Application of Differentiation through an in-class project. During this week, the students calculated the Absolute Maximum volume they could achieve when given specific dimensions to work with and then were required to construct boxes to reflect their calculated results. The project was an opportunity for students to see when content learned in class can be applied to real world problem solving and they were able to identify how different topics of content overlap."
- Joy Mc Bryne, Math Teacher
Honoring Korean Independence Activists
Students showed heartfelt gratitude for the sacrifices of the Koreans who had to die cruelly, for reason of loving their beloved country 100 years ago."
-Ms. Joohyun Park, Korean History Teacher
Altering Perception in AP Psychology
"In Williams World sometimes you need to have some fun! In AP Psychology, we recently did a lab where students wore goggles that wither, impaired or inverted their vision. The lab was created to show how much we really on our vision and how our senses interact with one another. Tasks ranged from shooting a target with a Nerf dart shooter to picking up candy with chopsticks. It wasn’t as easy as it sounds. The students enjoyed the lab and reported their findings on a reflective assignment.
This is just one of the ways we try to make learning real at CDS."

Phoenix Basketball Updates
Boys Basketball VS. ICSU
The varsity boys had their first away game of the season today and travelled to the hosting school of ICSP for their 2nd conference match of the season. They had a dominant first win of the season and they were looking to maintain that dominance within the division with the match today.
CDS got off to an amazing start with a 27-0 run in the 1st half and started to look really comfortable running their new offensive & defensive systems. It was looking to be another blowout for the Phoenix, so coach Monette opted to give his starters a rest and looked for his bench to carry on the strong play. ICSP were able to sneak past our defense a few times to score, but that was okay with us as we played great team basketball and everyone got a chance to play. All players except for 2 scored and all players except for a different two got rebounds as well. The mercy rule was put into effect during the 3rd quarter when CDS led 50-10.
The notable players of the game were Tylor Park who shot 78% from FG range, 75% from 3PT range, and made 100% of his layups for a total of 18 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal. Siyoon Kim shot a perfect 7 out of 7 from the FT line and totaled 12 points, 3 rebounds and an assist. Andrew Lee had his best game of the season with a total of 8 points, shooting 80% from the field and pulled down 4 rebounds, 2 blocked shots and 1 steal. Leo Hwang and Taehun Kim were all over the boards tonight and grabbed 8 boards each. Everyone on the team contributed in this victory!
We are looking forward to our next opponent on Wednesday when we face ICS-U.
Gooooo Phoenix!!!!
Girls Basketball VS. ICSU
The varsity girls had their first away game of the season today and travelled to the hosting school of ICSP for their 2nd conference match of the season. We barely squeaked out our first win of the season by 2 points, but we were looking to get a 2nd win and build upon our offense and defense from the previous game.
The game started out rough for our girls with ICSP going on a 10-0 run in the first few minutes of the game. Coach Monette called a time-out, got the girls to focus & remember the defensive system and principles we use. Then the girls went out there and played amazing defense the rest of the half by only allowing ICSP to score 4 points for the remaining 13 minutes of the half, but also scoring 11 points of our own. The game went back and forth and CDS was able to tie up the game at 18-18 by the start of the 4th quarter. Unfortunately, ICSP got the better of us in the 4th quarter.
The final score was 29-20 for ICSP.
The notable players of the game were Ashley Kim, Erica Jeon, and Fiona Park who each scored 6 points in the game. Erica Jeon had a 60% FG shooting percentage for the game and made 100% of her lay-ups. Erica also led the defensive side of the game for the CDS girls with 5 rebounds and 1 steal. Yerin Park also tallied 5 rebounds along with Ashley Kim and Eunsoo Kwon whom both collected 4 rebounds each, too.
CDS looks to pick up our 2nd win of the season when we play ICS-U on Wednesday!
Goooooo Phoenix!
Conflict Management & Improved Communication
Wednesday our 9th and 10th graders were given the opportunity to attend a lecture given by Inha University Professor and Dalton Parent, Mrs. Soojeong Kim. Her lecture focused on helping students develop the skills to properly manage conflict and improve communication.
Mrs. Kim discussed how understanding personality types can greatly improve your ability to understand those with whom you are collaborating and communicating. She also discussed a variety of communication and stress relief skills that will greatly benefit our students moving forward.
We greatly appreciated Mrs. Soojeong Kim for offering her time and expertise to our community. We look forward to collaborating with her in the near future! If you are a parent with connections talent or skills that you feel would benefit the CDS community in some way, please contact Mr. Jason Musselman (jmusselman@daltonschool.kr).
Updates & General Information
What's Up Wednesday!
Introducing Rho Kappa
College Counselling Updates
November through March is considered the busy season for applying universities. The early application deadline for universities in Hong Kong recently past and deadlines for universities in Japan begin this week. For this reason it is critical to communicate well with our counselors this time of the year.
We ask that our students book appointments with counselors well in advance. That they check their email frequently as important deadlines and information are sent there with regularity. It would also be beneficial for parents and students to frequently check the College Counseling Website for updates and upcoming events.
Over the final two weeks of the second term we will have four college visit us. We are thrilled to welcome the University of Toledo, Hult International Business University, SCAD, and Ritsumeikan APU. If you want to find out more about these schools please visit the CC office.
Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving break and see you in December!
