School Board Highlights - February 9, 2021
Black History Month
February is Black History Month and D103 students have been participating in many curriculum-aligned activities where they are learning about the history and accomplishments of black Americans. Principals shared with the school board activities that center around the celebration of diversity through social justice and injustice stories about African Americans, music and art exploring African American culture, black Americans in science and sports, and wrapping up with an assembly featuring Black History Month.
D103 Learning Update
Vaccination of Staff: Vaccines have been taking place at Stevenson and Round Lake High schools. Staff is also welcome to take the vaccine at public sites such as Walgreens and Jewel.
Fall Planning: D103 administration is planning for learning in the fall. There are many unknowns that will be considered during the fall planning such as:
Whether remote learning will be offered per state guidelines
The impact of new COVID-19 variants
The number of parents who will choose in-person learning versus remote learning for their children in the fall
Unknown guidance from the state about 6-foot distance requirements
If the number of families requesting in-person learning increases significantly, the district may need to find more space through office space rentals, installing mobile units, and/or offering hybrid models of alternate days or am/pm daily learning
Staffing variables: The district will consider fall enrollment to plan staffing.
Parent Survey: The administration will ask parents to respond to a survey regarding COVID and their interest in remote learning versus in-person learning for their children in the fall. The survey will be sent in February and is only for planning purposes, not a commitment from parents.
Metrics: Each day the COVID metrics continue to improve. To date, there has been no outbreak in any Lake County school.
Enrollment Projections
Enrollment projections show that D103 is estimated to see between 1,841 students and 1,868 students for the 2021-2022 school year. Those numbers are similar to this year’s enrollment. Typically D103’s enrollment falls in between those two numbers.
Exceptional Learners Collaborative Review
The district met with the administrative team from the Exceptional Learners Collaborative (ELC) to receive an overview of D103’s expenses and experience at the collaborative. The next step in the process is for the ELC Executive Board to analyze the services D103 uses at ELC to see if a new agreement would match the district’s needs in a more cost effective manner.
