It's a Great Day to Be Great!
Bessie Allen Middle School - SLO & Goals
Building SLO:
By June of 2015, 80% of students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade will show growth in their opinion writing sample rubric score from the September 2014 writing benchmark based on the school developed writing rubric (adapted from the Smarter Balanced writing rubric).
Building Goals:
DPI School of Recognition
PBIS School of Merit
Routinely Take Literacy Risks
Be a CEO
Driving Question for 2014-2015:
What have we changed with our instruction to prepare our students for the Badger Exam assessment (and other higher level thinking opportunities)?
Goals for SSR and SSW
- Provide a time for every student in our building to read and write.
- Ensure this time is a positive part of our students' day.
News and Notes
- Tech-Free Friday - We're going to make a change with Tech-Free Friday being optional for the rest of the school year. It has been going well to offer this to students, and they'll still have it as an option if they choose. From my observations, the majority of students aren't on their iPads at lunch.
- I will be out of the building for our next Pep Assembly on February 6th. We'll still run a Pep Assembly schedule and the Oriole Leaders will help to lead this event. Thank you Adam and Ginnie for supporting these students.
- I'm sending two letter home to our families with their reports cards. The first is a PTO fundraiser flyer about a discounted stay at the Wilderness Resort where the PTO will receive some of the proceeds. The other is a letter about a new idea. A parent in our district came up with an idea to start a BAMS Parent Council. The purpose of this would be to communicate and inform our parents about various issues at BAMS (i.e. assessment, safety, curriculum, etc.). The team would consist of parents from each grade level and myself. I'm looking to start this in March if there is enough parent interest. I'll keep you posted.
- Project Lead the Way (PLTW) - We have submitted two grant to receive $40,000 to start offering PLTW classes at BAMS. Our team isn't completly finalized yet, and we may not receive the funding, but if we do you will start to hear more about what this will mean for our students. The date we will find out if we receive the grants is February 15th.
- Staff Meeting Date Change for February - I need to change the staff meeting on the Early Release day in February to February 18th instead. I will be out of the building on this day. We will only have one meeting this month due to P/T conferences the last week in February.
