Social Emotional Learning
Parents,
Are you interested in learning more about the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) we are focusing on at Rice? If so, please make plans to attend the PISD SEL Parent Education Series throughout the school year. Our PISD SEL coordinator will share information about important social and emotional issues our students are facing every day, as well as provide tips on how to deal with them. The first meeting of the year is this Thursday. We hope to see you there!

REFLECTIONS 2019-2020 "LOOK WITHIN"
Rice PTA is proud to sponsor the Reflections program for 2019-2020. Reflections is a nationally acclaimed student recognition program to encourage artistic creativity in the classroom and at home. Students of all grades and abilities may participate and explore the arts based on the 2019-2020 theme: Look Within. The student or at least one person from their primary household must be a current member of the Local PTA/PTSA, so if your child is interested in participating please go to www.ricepta.org to join PTA today! Eligible students may enter any or all categories. The due date for all Reflections projects is October 30. See attached flyer for all the details.
PEANUT BUTTER DRIVE
The peanut butter drive benefiting North Texas Food Bank continues through September 30. Please send your donations of peanut or other nut butters to the rotunda at Rice to help our Collin County neighbors in need.
BOX TOPS - DEADLINE OCTOBER 16
The fall Box Tops deadline is approaching, so keep clipping those Box Tops! Or, download the Box Tops for Education app for an even easier way to contribute to Rice PTA. For app users, Double Box Tops week continues through September 22, so make sure you scan your receipts this week! Box tops can be submitted to the front office in a baggie. Thanks for supporting Rice PTA!
PTA SUPPORTS RICE TEACHERS
Your PTA membership dollars and donations directly support teacher grants for items and programs that benefit our students at Rice! Recently, our PTA has funded several items requested by teachers and staff, including
- a camera kit for yearbook students
- EnviroScape science kit for 7th graders
- drawing styluses for art students
- new bike racks
- a new blood pressure monitor for our school nurse
- 20th anniversary t-shirts for all staff and students
- TeacherFit program for Rice staff
PTA is proud to provide grants to our staff to enhance the educational and community experiences of our students. Help us continue to contribute to our students' success by joining Rice PTA or donating at www.ricepta.org.

Family Counseling and Conflict Resolution
Plano ISD Partners with Southern Methodist University to Provide
Family Counseling and Conflict Resolution
Plano ISD and Southern Methodist University (SMU) are joining together to provide counseling and mediation services to Plano ISD staff, students and their families beginning in September 2019. With a mission to deliver developmentally appropriate and culturally sensitive services to all clients, the clinic is located in the Cox Building located at 1517 H Ave., Plano, TX 75074.
Counseling Services – SMU Center for Family Counseling at Plano ISD
- Plano ISD staff, students and their family are eligible for services.
- The clinic is located in the Plano ISD Cox Building at 1517 H Ave., Plano, TX 75074.
- Hours of operation are Wednesdays and Thursdays 4 – 8 p.m. beginning September 4. For appointment, please call 469-752-3098 on or after September 4, or at any time to leave a voice message request for appointment.
- Counseling services are provided on a sliding fee scale ($0-45 per session) based on income.
- Services are supervised by SMU full-time and adjunct faculty and provided by SMU counseling practicum and internship students.
Services available:
- Play therapy for children
- Activity therapy for adolescents
- Couples and families therapy for anxiety, depression, behavior difficulties (e.g., opposition defiance, aggression), grief and loss, peer relationships, stress, trauma and parenting.

This week we will begin our Nitroball tournament. Please congratulate all of the winning teams from last week’s Volleyball tournament!
EZ-Scan Update – Our runners continued to improve this week, we amassed a whopping 1,648.16 miles!!! Great Job!
Next week we will begin our Badminton unit. Students are allowed to bring their own rackets and store them in the coaches' offices for the week.

High Kicks and Herkies Drill/Cheer Clinic
Does your kid like to dance or cheer? Don’t miss High Kicks and Herkies presented by the Jasper Jazz and Jasper Cheerleaders. Kindergarten through 8th graders will experience a dance clinic, cheer clinic, and "show off" on Saturday, Sept. 21, as well as perform with the Jasper Jazz and cheerleaders at a Jasper High School football game on Thursday, Sept. 26.
