Greetings from the Principal
Dear Riverview Families,
Welcome back to 2017! Hopefully everyone enjoyed time with friends and loved ones. It seems as though students and staff alike have returned excited to be back with one another and ready to continue on their learning journey. Second semester is a time where students deepen their comprehension of content, develop sharper academic skills, and settle into enjoyable peer relationships.
Riverview staff had the opportunity yesterday to focus on one of our school improvement goals: helping students develop a growth mindset. Staff attended a presentation by Annie Brock, co-author of The Growth Mindset Coach. As you may recall, having a growth mindset means that given enough time and effort, a person can get better at just about anything; success is not determined by IQ, but by effort. Perhaps you set a new year resolution for 2017. If so, this is an example of growth mindset!
Research suggests that praising our kids for being "smart" or "talented," may foster a fixed mindset. Instead, if we encourage our kids' efforts and acknowledge their persistence and hard work, then we will support their development of a growth mindset. Children with a growth mindset believe that with effort and persistence they can learn and achieve in school. A growth mindset will better equip them to persevere and pick themselves up when things do not go their way. Teachers are working to help our children believe that with effort, persistence, and motivation, students can achieve their goals, and parents can help with this, too!
Dr. Carol Dweck, an educational researcher, states: Parents should not shield their children from challenges, mistakes, and struggles. Instead, parents should teach children to love challenges. They can say things like "This is hard. What fun!" or "This is too easy. It's no fun." They should teach their children to embrace mistakes, "Oooh, here's an interesting mistake. What should we do next?" And they should teach them to love effort: "That was a fantastic struggle. You really stuck to it and made great progress," or "This will take a lot of effort-boy, will it be fun."
It takes time and practice to develop a growth mindset, but it is well worth it when you see the difference that it makes in your children.
Go boldly,
Beth Mildren
