May It Be of Benefit
Hello Families,
I came across this quote in a book of daily inspiration and it really struck me. No matter what our current experiences are, they will one day be in our past. Our ability to recover, love, and thrive in our lives depends greatly on how we resolve and integrate where we've been before. The author shared that a great example of this is found in the chambered nautilus, an exquisite shell creature that lives along the ocean floor. Over time it builds a spiral shell but always lives in the newest chamber. Other chambers contain gas or liquid that helps the nautilus control its buoyancy. The lesson: live in the most recent chamber and use the others to stay afloat. Can we, in this way, build strong chambers from our traumas: not living there but breaking our experiences down and using what we've learned to lift ourselves up?
We can view our responses to the challenges that the pandemic has brought to our children and their education as nautilus chambers. We face what is happening, lean in, and create solutions. Then, we rise up and move on from there to what is next.
We may get tired from all that we are experiencing, but our children are worth everything we are doing for them. The author ended his reflection with this, "Only by living in the freshest chamber of the heart can we love again and again for the first time." That thought both comforts and challenges me. I hope it resonates with you as well.
With gratitude,
Mrs. Gold
