Making 2017-18.... #memorablemeaningfulandmeasurable
It's a Beautiful Day in JROB's Learning Community, A Beautiful Day in JROB's Learning Community
Dear Team Robinson,
As many of you know , I am a child of the 70's...and Mr. Rogers was my friend. As my friend we would sing together each day, "It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood" and I am soooo proud to sing
"It's a beautiful day in JROB's learning community, It's a beautiful day".
This past week I was asked what is going well at Robinson? I didn't even hesitate to reply:
- My students and staff are smiling, happy, and focused
- My staff is working on building relationships with students and using specific actions: saying hello/good morning, fist pumps, encouraging words, signing parents up for class dojo, interest surveys and 1:1 interviews, book tasting/valuing their interest needs etc.
- Renewed since of collective ownership to school and student success
- Establishing goals and monitoring systems
- Embracing technology as our "new friend"
I am sooooo excited to WELCOME our community to the 2017-18 school year and Back to School Night. We have had a FANTASTIC start and I know it is going to be an AWESOME year of school and student SUCCESS. I am committed to making everyday memorable, meaningful and measurable for the students in whom I serve.
As you begin to make your last minute preparations for Back to School Night; this is the first opportunity in which many parents will meet and greet you for the first time...first impressions are lasting impressions.
Please be reminded every parent wants the best for their child. They send their child through those green gates each day and they want to know and be reassured that as they send them that their child has the best teacher who will care and develop them to meet grade level standards.
Therefore, I challenge you to make it "a beautiful day....that is memorable, meaningful and measurable for our parent community !"
Reminders
- Brochures/Digital Presentations that include grade level scope and sequence/content areas - (Submit to Ms. Spenker)
- Grading policies and homework included in your presentations
- Communication avenues included in your presentations
- Supplies are needed each day (backpack, pencil/paper/spiral notebooks and homework)
- Book/resources to be used should be visible and displayed
- Distribute - Online Information Please inform parents that schools will use and require the need for at home online access to complete assignments...this is the new age**
- We are unable to accommodate the "high demand/need" of our community with translation support by office personnel. Therefore, please ensure that there are avenues for parents to be supported.
SEL TidBits of the Week.....Err on Positive MATH
“Every child needs at least one adult who is irrationally crazy about him or her.”
Urie Bronfenbrenner
I want to think about some of the math…
How many years does a child spend in school?
How many adults do they interact with?
Based on whatever numbers you come up with for the above, do we really think that “one”, or even five, is enough?
Me neither.
This is why I talk about the idea of “school teacher” vs. “classroom teacher” often. In my belief, “classroom teachers” know their content amazingly well and are great with their current group of students. But once they step outside of their classroom, the students they do not teach are “not their problem”. “School teachers” on the other hand, can do all of those things that classroom teachers do within their own classrooms and subject matter, but when they walk out of their room, every child in the school is their child.
If you see a child walking down a hallway and you do not acknowledge them, that is an opportunity missed. An opportunity that could have made all of the difference in that moment, that day, sometimes even life.
Always err on the side of positive. Kids need more than a “few” teachers that make them feel they think the world of them.
Who's on your playlist???
Recognizing how busy an educator is and how many competing priorities vie for your time, we have worked with the Curriculum Office to make your access to curriculum, instruction, and assessment materials easier. Instead of working your way through the Intranet to gather these materials, we are excited to unveil "PD Playlists" for ELA and math, with other content areas to follow! PD Playlists batch all of the materials you need for instruction in one place, and once you join a Playlist, you will always have access to it on your myPD Home Page. You never need to hunt for it again! Support materials are available for you in Course #7538. Explore Playlists today!
For all other content areas, we have made the search and filtering features in the Learning Opportunities Tab easier to use and navigate as you search for curriculum docs to support your work. Simply click into the "Learning Opportunities" tab. In the "Learning Opportunities Search" channel, click Show All. On the left hand side, you have filters that you can apply to narrow your search by Content Area, Grade Level, and now type of Resource (click Miscellaneous to explore the options). Support videos are soon to follow!
Pro tip: If you want an exact match to a search, use quotes. So if you want materials on formative assessment, use quotes around the search term: "formative assessment".
As we continue on this journey to personalize your professional development and learning experiences, we are grateful for your suggestions and affirmations. As with any innovation, we have more to learn and look forward to improving your experience with every new lesson we learn. Our goal is to be better today, than yesterday! Thank you for your feedback and for helping us to get there!
