Hawthorne School News: 9/21/18

A newsletter from Hawthorne School and the PTA

Run A Thon is Wednesday, September 26th

Get ready to run for our school! Pledge cards went home this week. If your student raises $150 they earn a gift card to Moore Toys & Gadgets, $100 earns a Kimmer's Ice Cream voucher, and $50 earns a Hawthorne key chain. The student who raises the most money will receive a gift card to Prairie Path books. The class that raises the most will earn a free lunch party from Chick-fil-A! Thanks to these local businesses as well as DuPage Cheer, Tumbling & Trampoline for their donations.

Without these funds, the Hawthorne PTA couldn't provide finances for field trips, Dreambox subscriptions, staff appreciation treats, assemblies, Mr. Lee the Science Guy, Garden Club, Multicultural Day, patrol lunch, fifth grade end-of-year celebration, Battle of the Books, and so much more. It takes $13,000 just to maintain our current programs and activities each year. Please consider donating and/or volunteering to mark laps that day. Thanks to Mr. Q. and Co-Chairs Sherri Scott and Emily Fedyski for organizing Run A Thon again this year!

Parent/Teacher Conferences

If you were unable to attend a parent-teacher conference this week, please contact your child's teacher directly to set up a time that works for you. Thank you for partnering with us at Hawthorne School!

Updates from the P.E. Department

We are off to a great start so far in P.E. this school year! Students have been very active and working very hard. Kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade student’s have been working on locomotor movements (walking, skipping, hopping, jumping, sliding, galloping, running, and leaping) while moving through open space safely. We have talked about how each movement is different and have practiced each movement in a variety of tagging games, and locomotor movement activities. Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade classes will be moving on to foot skills next in the upcoming weeks, working on control, kicking for accuracy, and kicking for distance.

Student’s in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade have been working on cooperation, teamwork, perseverance, and social-emotional learning in a variety of cooperative games and activities. We will be starting a soccer unit followed by a football unit in the upcoming weeks. We will be focusing on skills such as soccer passing, shooting, defense strategies, offensive strategies, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Other news: Morning running club is every Monday and Wednesday 8:30-9:00 a.m. until November 14th. We’ve had an amazing turn out so far with 127 student’s participating!

PTA Run-A-Thon will be on Wednesday, September 26th.

Wheaton North Football Day will be held on Wednesday, October 17th. More information will be coming soon!

Sincerely,

Mr. Q

Thirty Million Words: Building a Child's Brain

Tuesday, Nov. 13th 2018 at 7pm

Glen Ellyn Public Library, 400 Duane Street, Glen Ellyn

The single most important thing you can do for your child’s future success in life is to talk to them. Dr. Dana Suskind, author and founder of the Thirty Million Words Initiative, explains the power of language and how parents can tune in, talk more, and take turns building a child’s brain. A Q&A and book signing will follow her presentation. Copies of her book, Thirty Million Words: Building a Child’s Brain will be available for purchase. Educators who attend can request one free CPDU credit. Register for this free event here.

This event is co-sponsored by Glenbard Early Childhood Collaborative, Westminster Preschool, Glenbard Parent Series, and the Glen Ellyn Public Library.

Vision and Hearing Screening

On September 28 the DuPage County Health Department will be at Hawthorne School to conduct vision and hearing screenings. Students are screened as follows:

Vision and Hearing: Grades K, 2, transfer students without a current screenings on file and Special Education students

Please note that a vision screening is not a substitute for a complete eye and vision evaluation by an eye doctor. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Chris Gilbertsen, School Nurse at 630-682-2065.
