Middle School Message

December 5th, 2022

Our mission: We are a community of learners inspiring each child to explore, grow, and achieve.

Winding down....

Just ten short days until Winter Break! We are focused on both learning and fun for the next two weeks.

Some highlights we want the kids to look forward to include a Holiday Bake Off this Wednesday, Kona Ice this Thursday, a Holiday Dance this Friday, and Club Day and Holiday games next Friday.

Our PTO will be doing Candygrams for students next week Dec. 12-16. Parents can send candygrams to their children or students can send them to each other. Your child will receive a sweet treat and a note from you for $1. Please complete this Google Form if you'd like to send a Candygram and then send your money in a sealed envelope to be delivered to the school office. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfhwveHyLnMlJ_z1Oy8tpaat0CNZG2RP0fN_Kpb4eGCYB5Lew/viewform?usp=sf_link

Amid all the fun though we also have Restart Readiness testing happening in this time. You may recall from fall, but Restart Readiness is an opportunity for students to take a practice state test and for their teachers to get rich data about how to best help close any learning gaps that remain from our time in COVID. We did the English Language Arts testing earlier this fall and all students will participate in the Math Restart Readiness next week on the 13th and 14th. Additionally 8th grade students will be taking the Science test during their regularly scheduled classes. As a parent, you can encourage your student to get a good night's sleep and eat breakfast on those days next week.

Finally, our drama and choir students have been working hard to prepare for The Music Man. It will be performed this Wednesday evening at 7 pm in the High School PAC (Performing Arts Center). Tickets are available at www.lakewooddrama.com. Come out and support our 76 students in this show (to those who are fans of The Music Man...that number is accurate and ironic!).

Stay warm this week!

ICU--After School Help

Does your child have a lot of missing assignments or need homework help? Sign them up for After-School ICU. Twice a week, on Wednesdays and Thursdays, we provide after-school intervention from 2:30-3:30. A middle school teacher will stay after school with your child and help him/her get caught up. You can sign your child up for this using this link: https://bit.ly/ICUSignUp

Staff Spotlight

Mrs. Jeanine Fairburn

Mrs, Fairburn is one of our 8th grade English Language Arts teachers.

1. How long have you worked at LMS? Nearly 20 years. 3 years as a sub and 16 or 17 years as a teacher.

2. Favorite thing about 8th graders? I love that 8th graders are beginning to find their voice. They are beginning to understand that they can have an independent opinion and that their opinions matter.

3. Something you are thankful for this month? I'm especially thankful for my work friends along with my family. I have three grown boys and it is a pleasure to see them grow into human beings that I enjoy spending time with. I'm also thankful for my husband who supports every step I take.

Mr. Scott Elwer

Mr. Elwer is our 8th grade Social Studies teacher.

1) This is my 14th year at LMS.

2) Eighth Graders are old enough to have important conversations with, but they are still developing their own beliefs.

3) My daughter lives in Cincinnati and my son is a sophomore at Walsh University in Canton.

Mr. Jamie Mason

Mr. Mason is our 8th grade Intervention Specialist. Mr. Mason is a Lakewood graduate himself.

This is year 26 of teaching at LMS. (42 years in total at Lakewood if you count being a student here and 3 years of being on band staff while not a teacher)

My favorite thing about 8th graders is that I can count on them to keep my days interesting!

Fun fact: After our summer vacation, I will only have 3 states remaining to have been to all 50 states. (Utah, New Mexico, and Hawaii)

Mr. Nick Claybourn

Mr. Claybourn is our 8th grade Science teacher.

1) Second year at LMS

2)The different personalities, and independent thinking that 8th graders bring on a day to day basis

3)In my spare time I restore old vehicles with my kids.
