CURIOUS COMMUNITIES TECH WEEK
Distilling - What a Journey!
Four representatives of Room 3 explained to a large group of people at Puke-Ariki, as part of Tech-week, about our distilling journey and the hydrosols that we make. Maisie, Lockie, Isabella and Lucas did Toko School proud and explained our journey thus far, in such a way that children and parents alike were able to understand. Their 30 minute presentation consisted of a slide-show and showed the various equipment that had been purchased. They then had to answer some tricky questions about distilling and many people then purchased some of our hydrosols afterwards.
SCHOOL APP
PAID UNION MEETINGS
On Tuesday 26th June our school will be open, but not for instruction from 1.30 - 3.00 on this day. If you are able to collect your children at 1.30pm that would be really appreciated. If you are unable to collect your children at 1.30pm could you please e.mail office@toko.school.nz
What are these meetings about:
Teachers and principals have consistently raised workload, lack of support for students with additional learning and behavioural needs, and undervaluing of the profession, as key issues over the last few years. We have tried to address these issues through previous rounds of negotiations and through work programmes. Although some progress has been achieved, it has been insufficient to address the deep seated and fundamental issues facing our profession. This has led to a crisis in recruitment and retention of teachers and principals. So the Kua Tae Te Wā/It’s Time campaign has been launched to achieve the significant investment we need, so that all children can reach their potential, and teaching is an attractive, valued and well supported profession.
Overall Campaign Objective To achieve major new government investment in teaching and learning.
SUPPORTING LEARNING AT HOME . . . ACCOUNTABLE TALK
At school we support children to be accountable in their talk by teaching them to revoice.
As teachers we are always focusing on how we talk in the classroom and the types of conversations we want to hear children having in our classrooms. Our students may know the right or wrong answers to questions but can often struggle with how to talk to other students about their thinking and their ideas.
-Revoicing is clarifying your own reasoning.
-Revoicing allows students to clarify and elaborate their reasoning and answers.
-Revoicing gives students ownership of their answer and reasoning.
-Revoicing gives students confidence to answer questions knowing that you understand what they are saying!
Below are some statements we use to assist students with revoicing:
< What I heard you say . . .
< So you are saying . . . Is that right?
WESTPAC CHOPPER APPEAL 2018

There will be two prizes per class for the best dressed students.

LIBRARY NEWS
The library website is now up and running again. It is accessible through the school website.
Students have been given their borrower number and password details by their teacher. They will need this to be able to access the site as someone other than a guest. This will enable them to view their borrowing, when books that are on loan are due back, and any overdues that they may have. Other features are also available within the site so I encourage you to visit with your children and view what is available.
The library catalogue is available to everyone as a guest.
The main page shows new titles that are available and a summary of these. These are on display in the library also. Featured books are ‘Top Picks’ and are at the top of the page.
Book trailers will also be available at different times.
News from the library will also be featured here.
We are currently working on adding many more features that will enhance your child’s learning and interests.

COMMUNITY NOTICES
Year 8 Open evening for Stratford High School will be on Wednesday 30th May, 5pm to 7pm.
St Mary’s Diocesan School in Stratford is looking for families who would be interested in sharing their home with an international student for 4 weeks this August 2018.
We have students coming from a Dongguan school in China, who would like to home stay with a family to experience the Kiwi lifestyle. We do provide you with payment and there are school buses which run daily to and from New Plymouth and Hawera. You do not need to have daughters currently at St Mary’s Diocesan.
Do you have a spare bedroom and think you might enjoy hosting an ‘international daughter’? It is a wonderful opportunity and you may even gain a life-long extended family member.
If you would like to talk about this as a possibility for your family please either phone the Homestay Coordinator, Mrs Lesley Sutherland on 027 316 0595 or St Mary’s School office on 06 765 5333.
Bridge Closure - NZTA Media Release
The NZ Transport Agency says a detour will be in place for most of June at the Stratford end of State Highway 43 while repairs are undertaken on Kahouri Stream Bridge.
The road around the bridge will be closed from Tuesday 5 June until Friday 29 June while the guardrails are replaced. From Friday 29 June to Friday 20 July the bridge will be open but the site will be under a 30km/h speed restriction and traffic may be stopped for short periods.
While the road is closed there will be a detour in place off State Highway 3 at Midhurst on Beaconsfield Road or State Highway 3 south of Stratford on Bird Road/Skinner Road.
NZTA’s Manawatu/Wanganui Transport System Manager, Ross I’Anson, says the guardrails are being replaced to keep the bridge safe for everyone who uses it.
“We would like to thank motorists for the patience during the closure and we will endeavour to complete this work and open the road as soon as we can.
“Drivers should allow extra time for their journeys and drive carefully on the unfamiliar roads,” Mr I’Anson says.
The completion and start dates may change because the work is weather dependent.
The school has contacted the bus company Tranzit about bus times, as they will be altered, and we will let you know when we have this information.
