Dear Winter Park Band families,


CONGRATULATIONS once more to the students of the "Sound of the Wildcats" marching band on their performance at Marching Band MPA this weekend! I am so proud of how they performed both on and off the field. They all represented our school and Winter Park community well and were excellent ambassadors of the Band program. When your musicianship, positive attitude, and dedication to each other throughout the school year shows through in a day like Saturday, success is always close to follow! The Superior ratings from the adjudication panel were well deserved.


An enormous THANK YOU is also in order for all of the parents who have volunteered to chaperone our marching band events this fall. The Band would quite literally not get anywhere without you! Robyn Fodor has done a masterful job coordinating our parent volunteers each week. Keith Gavin and the team of parents who help operate the trailer and safely transport our equipment to and from performances. Wayne Baker, our trailer driver, for volunteering his time each week to drive our equipment. Last, but most definitely not least, thank you to our Band Booster President Natalie Storch who continues to work to truly make this program run smoothly.


This week on Wednesday, November 10 we will be welcoming the bands from Audubon Park School, Glenridge MS, and Maitland MS to join us for our annual Fall Festival of Bands. This is such a special night each year, and an opportunity to celebrate our grade 6 - 12 Winter Park Band community! In addition to the middle school bands' performances, our Wind Symphony will perform a brief program and the "Sound of the Wildcats" Marching Band will conclude the evening with an indoor standstill performance of our Les Miserables show. As a reminder, a rehearsal for the marching band is scheduled on Tuesday, November 9 from 2:45 - 4 PM. This rehearsal will take place in the Auditorium and is crucial for the SOTW to prepare for our Fall Festival of Bands performance.


Next week on Thursday, November 18 will will again welcome the students in our feeder middle school pattern to WPHS for our annual Night of Jazz. We can't wait to see all of our future Wildcats two weeks in a row and share music with them and their families!


According to the bracket on the FHSAA website, the football team did end up making the playoffs. We will be performing as a pep band this Friday evening at Seminole HS in Sanford, meaning the full band attends the game, but we will not perform at halftime. Please see the itinerary for more details.

Wow! What a wonderful performance at Marching MPA!! Congratulations to the students and directors for a great marching season and the straight superiors. I can’t wait for the concert on Wednesday!


Thank you so much to all of the volunteers who waited on Friday night to see if the game was a go and for all of those who spent the day helping with marching MPA (chaperoning, serving pizza, helping with uniforms, etc.) and who came out to support the band. It’s such a great event, and we truly appreciate all of the volunteers yesterday and for the entire marching season. You help make the program possible for these amazing students. Seniors, thank you for your leadership--I know all of the the marchers will miss you next year.


Please stay tuned for a General Band Booster Meeting (before the concert in December)—which is for ALL parents/guardians/interested adults. We’ll talk about the remainder of the year and what is ahead after the holiday break (including Door 2 Door).

Pride of the Wildcats - Winter Park Band Fleet Vehicle Support and Improvement

We are very proud of our Operations side of the Winter Park Band. We have a dedicated group of parents that take the Winter Park Band & Color Guard to all their events. However, without the use of the large tractor trailer that transports our equipment to and from each marching band event and the small trailer for color guard the task would be next to impossible.


Through the years, the operations group has made many changes to the trailers to improve the functionality for the Winter Park Band. Historically, all of the monies have been raised through private contributions of a select groups of parents and through the Alumni Foundation. Because of this the need of a full fundraiser event to deflect the cost of the band operations was never really until now.


In effort to maintain our large trailer’s top-notch condition, we are planning to do some MAJOR repairs and improvements to the trailer that is now in its 15th year of service for WPHS band. Additionally, we need to either replace (preferable) the small trailer or make it road worthy again.


Some of the items on our list of improvements are costly, including:


  • Repairing some minor damage to larger trailer
  • Repainting the lower section of the large trailer
  • Rewrapping the upper section of the large trailer
  • Replace wheel bearings on front axle
  • Moving the back stairway to the back of the trailer
  • Replacing or repairing the small trailer
  • And other improvements to keep our kids and volunteers safe.



Since we are re-wrapping the large trailer, we will be selling sponsor spots on the larger trailer to defray the cost. There are 10 spots that are available for $1,000 each and the entire front of the trailer for $5,000. These opportunities are a great way to support the Winter Park Band and they are also tax deductible.

We will be also seeking volunteers to help at a Trailer Work- Days throughout the month of January. We will be repairing minor body damage, painting the trailer and removing the old logos. Please contact Keith Gavin @ kgavin@sscands.com if you can assist.

    There is a direct link to CutTime in "Quick Links" on the band website.


    To access Cut Time, follow these steps.

    • Go to CutTime.net and click “SIGN IN” in the top right-hand corner.
    • Enter your Username or Email and Password You are now on your profile, where you can access our calendar and handouts and files. Click “Update Info” tab to input or update contact information. Don’t forget to click “Update” when you are finished.
    • Click the “Finances” tab to view financial statements.

    PRIVATE LESSONS

    Whether a student is learning a musical instrument to pursue a career in music, or simply for personal musical fulfillment and recreation, private lessons are one of the best investments that a parent can provide for their musical child. When working with a private teacher, students receive one-on-one instruction from a professional musician who specializes on that instrument.

    ​Unlike a full band rehearsal experience, studying with a private teacher focuses in on the student’s individual needs. Students who study privately once a week from a professional musician are usually those who excel and find Band more enjoyable. These students frequently earn positions in honor groups like All-State and All-County, and make entry into our more advanced bands like Wind Symphony and Jazz Ensemble I. Some even go on to earn college scholarships, even if they are not majoring in music!
