Marauder Moments 2023
February
Message from Dr. Avery & Mr. Pray
Midterm / Regents week has come and gone! In speaking to the students around midterms and regents, it was very evident that "stressed out" was at the top of the list of things they were feeling. According to mind.org, stress comes in all shapes and sizes. Stress bubbles to the surface as feelings of anger, nervousness, fear, anxiety, depression, and worry. It can make you feel fatigued, prone to panic attacks, experience bowel issues, sudden weight gain or loss, and cause trouble sleeping.
There is no getting away from stress. It is how we cope with stress that helps or hurts us. We are all aware of the ways we hurt ourselves to alleviate stress - drugs, avoidance, escapism, fighting, anger, and so on. However, there are also a number of positive ways to deal with stress. One of the best (and most accessible) is to focus on our breathing. When stressed, we tend to take fast shallow breaths. This causes much of the carbon dioxide to stay in our systems and keeps our levels of oxygen low. When this happens, our bodies retaliate with increased blood pressure, elevated heart rates, headaches, and a general feeling of unease and panic.
Deep breathing (taking a deep breath) gets rid of that carbon dioxide and brings in the needed oxygen. This, then, helps our bodies to return to a more controlled state. One way to really focus on our breathing is to take a deep breath in while counting to 7, hold for a count of 3, slowly exhale to a count of 10, and hold for a count of three. Repeat. This not only replenishes your oxygen levels, but the counting gives your brain something to do - which breaks the cycle of repeated worry/stress in that moment.
Worth something to think about...

Cafeteria Message
The Cafeteria staff would like to update all students that lunches are not free for everyone this year. Students will need to make sure they have money on their accounts or have their household submit a Free/Reduced Meal application if they believe they qualify for free/reduced price meals. Upon getting lunch, before you go back to the cafeteria, students must stop by the register to have their lunch deducted from their balance.
