Principal's Corner
Dear FSA Community,
I would like to start this newsletter by congratulating our MathCounts team for winning state championship five years in a row. Please see the details of this great news right after my corner.
Please be reminded that Fulton Science Academy has moved to Cyber School until further notice. Our school staff and faculty members are working together to make the best out of this situation. I am so proud of our teachers and students and families for working together during this trying time across the globe. I am so thankful to be a part of this family.
We know that during this time, there are many students around the nation and in our counties and neighborhoods that will lose access to school breakfast and lunch, among other necessities. If you would like to help, there are options listed below.
At this time, we ask that students and staff, please do not come to the school and please practice social distancing. We have all heard this term in the news as of late, and it is crucial in flattening the curve and attempting to slow this pandemic.

What are Office Hours?
Cyber School is new to everyone. It can be hard and even feel impossible to ask your teachers questions when you don’t understand something. Even if you feel like this, your teachers are here to help! Office Hours are a time when you can talk with your teachers to get some answers to questions you might have had all day, or even all week. Spend some extra time with your teachers, asking questions, so you can feel confident about what you have learned!
This is new for all of us! We'd like to see how our families are dealing with cyber days, whether through school or how you are keeping active during this social distancing! Be sure to send pictures to smelton@fultonscienceacademy.org to share on our social media and in the next newsletter! We may be a small school, but we are a big family and we miss our precious students and families! Lets try to keep everyone's spirits up!
Stay safe. Stay healthy.
I look forward to seeing you all soon!

FSA MATH TEAM WINS MATHCOUNTS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP 5 YEARS IN A ROW
March 9th, 2020. Alpharetta, GA. – Fulton Science Academy’s Middle School Math Team won First Place as a team in the 2020 Georgia MATHCOUNTS Competition that was held at Emory University on Monday, March 9, 2020.
Additionally, one of our eight grade math team students, Nick Ackaramongkolrotn, and the school’s Department Head and Math Team Coach, Mrs. Sema Duzyol, will head to Nationals in Orlando later this spring.
Only the top four students from each state are invited to participate in the National MATHCOUNTS Competition, as well as the coach from the state’s ranking first place team who is given the unique opportunity to lead the Georgia team to Nationals. This is the fifth consecutive year that Fulton Science Academy Private School has had at least one student and its coach advance to the National MATHCOUNTS.
“I am thrilled to be coaching Georgia’s MATHCOUNTS Team and to be representing Georgia at the National Tournament five years in a row. Our team qualified to National MATHCOUNTS for the first time in May 2016 in the 13 years of history of FSA at the time and only in two years GA MATHCOUNTS team moved up to 4th place in the Nation from 28th place” said Coach Duzyol.
In addition to an overall first place team win in the state finals, FSA was honored to have Nick Ackaramongkolrotn placed first individually, Ethan Morgan placed 16thindividually, Richard Kang placed 21st individually and Rohan Morgan placed 28th individually on March 9 against best mathletes in state.
Team members were all thrilled to see how much they have accomplished thus far after placing third as a team in Chapter MATHCOUNTS competition on Saturday February 8th. “MATHCOUNTS has always been very challenging! After we had a close call during Chapter competition, we definitely continued to work hard as a team and went into this state competition with our sights set on performing our best as a team, I am so proud of our team,” said eight grader, Nick Ackaramongkolrotn, FSA MATHCOUNTS team captain and Georgia State’s first place winner. “We competed against approximately best 200 mathletes of Georgia so it was critical for us to stay focused, calm, and to hammer away at each problem methodically.
Coach Duzyol confirmed the intense competition, commenting, “Every year, the state tournament gets more rigorous and competition questions become more challenging, and yet we were able to keep the state championship in house for the fifth consecutive year! About every other two years, we have a new team competing at the middle school mathcounts tournament, we keep our team performance consistent by actively engaging in intense series of collaborative workshops during summer break, thanksgiving break, winter break, every weekend, and week days which showed the students’ very serious dedication to the tournament.”
Duzyol continued, “I could not be more proud of our students. In addition to juggling very demanding academic schedules, they still manage to spend dozens of hours in workshops preparing. It is such an inspiration to guide them and work together with them; their shared love of math and the positive manner in which they encourage one another is really something special.”
“It is a testament to the dedication of Coach Duzyol to have our team won State Championship five years in a row with at least one student in the top four finalists at the state competition where they competed against the best minds from every chapter in Georgia,” said Fulton Science Academy Principal, Kenan Sener.
Congratulations to our champions and their coach Mrs. Duzyol! Good Luck to Georgia MATHCOUNTS Team at the Nationals in May, in Orlando!!

Want to see your activities outside of the cyber classroom on mustang news? Well if you do something fun, creative or interesting tell us about it. You can email FSANEWS@futlonscienceacademy.org and smelton@fultonscienceacademy.org with a brief summary of what you did with some pictures so that we can put it on MNT News and the schoolwide newsletter.
If you have any tips on how your fellow students can stay active send mustang news a 20 second video that we can share. Please include your grade and name of course.
ELA teacher Haley Crockett shared how her class has been doing live grading:
"Live grading with Sanjay T., a 6th grader in 7th ELA. All students are live grading the essays they wrote for the national Sejong Writing Competition. With live grading, students meet with me and first tell me one major strength and one major weakness/ challenge of their essay. Then they read their essay to me paragraph by paragraph, and we stop to discuss strengths and areas to change. At the end, we both go through the rubric and determine an appropriate grade. Students leave having a clear grasp on what to do to improve their essays. This works even better through Zoom because meetings are automatically recorded, so students can go back and review verbal comments as they revise."

College Board Update on AP Classes and Exams
The College Board posted the following on their Facebook Page today the following message,
"The College Board is developing tools to mitigate the impact of school closures on students in the Advanced Placement Program. All AP students and teachers will be able to draw on the free online resources that were provided to every AP classroom this fall. Additional resources will be made easily accessible to AP students and teachers through mobile phones and other devices. These include free online AP lessons and review sessions from some of the top AP teachers in the country.
The AP program is finalizing streamlined AP exam options that would allow students to test at home, depending on the situation in May. We’re working to give every AP student the opportunity to claim the credit they’ve earned. The AP Program will communicate the details of these additional solutions to educators and students by March 20.
The College Board’s focus will remain on student safety and ensuring all students have the tools they need to work, and opportunities to receive the credit they have earned, during this challenging time.

Science Fair Moves to a Virtual Showcase
The state science fair will be virtual. Students will have to record their presentation and send it in.
FSA's Science Department Chair Julianne Oliver said of the virtual Science Fair, " I'm glad it isn’t cancelled and it's a good chance for the students to work on presentation and video skills!"
Video quality will not be a factor in judging – only the content of the board and presentation.
The Science Fair will be March 26 - 28
So what is happening with Math Competitions at this point?
As this is an ongoing situation, we will do our best to keep everyone as up to date as possible.
Did you know March is International Women's Month?
In an article by Jone Johnson Lewis she calls attention to these words by former President Jimmy Carter in 1980 :
"From the first settlers who came to our shores, from the first American Indian families who befriended them, men and women have worked together to build this Nation. Too often, the women were unsung and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed."
President Carter used these words when he marked the beginning of a new chapter in American history; one where women and their work, the promotion of their rights became a more explicit concern. That initial effort was expanded in 1987, when March was designated as Women's History Month.
