Lloyd Road School Newsletter
November 2016
Principal's Message:
Dear Parents/Guardians:
The end of our first marking period is quickly coming to a close on November 15. We always use these quarterly time periods to reflect on how things have gone so far, what we have planned going forward, and any adjustments that may need to be made. We encourage you to do the same with your children at home as well. We will be reviewing our curriculum progress, student achievement, and programs.
Although our parent teacher conferences are now once a year (in January), if you have any questions about content your child is learning, or about their achievement, do not hesitate to reach out to their particular teacher/s.
Thank you,
Mr. Jerabek
Principal

Halloween Dance
The Halloween dance on Friday, October 28 was a tremendous success with over half of the school attending (over 300 students) and many parent volunteers. Thank you to the PTO for all of the planning, all of the parents who donated food or drink items, the parent volunteers, and the students for having fun and making it a fantastic night!
Presidential School Election
On November 3 and 4 our enrichment and basic skills teacher Mrs. Adelson helped organize a school-wide election in which all students and staff had scheduled times to go to a voting booth set up in the main entrance hallway to cast their ballots. Prior to the election Mrs. Adelson provided classes with election information so the students could become familiar with the process and the candidates. The results are in, and based on the Lloyd Road School vote, Hillary Clinton was elected President of the United States of America!
Pick a Feather
The Lloyd Road PTO will be running the "Pick a Feather" Food Drive again this year! From November 7- November 9th, students can "Pick a Feather" from Tom the Turkey in the main hallway. Please note you should fill out a Pick a Feather Form for your student if he/she will be participating. Forms as well as detailed information can be found in the Virtual Backpack.
Grading for Specials Classes:
1. Has there been a change to the grading in specials from the previous G, S, N, N/A?
This year the report card grades for specials classes (Art, Gym, Music, Computers, and Spanish) will show on the report cards with the same grade scale as the general content classes (A+ to F). The district switched to using the same scale as the general content classes to have one consistent grading scale. Please keep in mind that even when the G,S,N, N/A scale was used in previous years each letter was still associated with a numeric value. This year the only change is having the numeric values associated with the A+ to F scale.
2. In the past the specials class grades showed up on the report cards as letter grades such as G, S, N, and N/A
This year the specials' grades will show up on the report cards using the A+ to F scale. Keep in mind that some specials teachers may use a grade book grading scale of E,G, S, N, U or a similar one, but any individual teacher's grade book scoring system converts to the A+ to F scale on the report card.
3. Do the number grade values calculate into the overall GPA?
Yes, all grades will be calculated in to students' GPA.
3. Is it possible to get higher than an 85?
Yes, since the scale follows the A+ to F grading scale it is possible to achieve higher than an 85. If you have any question about a particular content grade you should contact that particular teacher to gain a better understanding of their grading system as all teachers have the flexibility to use their preferred grade book system, categories, scale as long as it is able to convert to the A+ to F scale on the report card.

Title 1 Family Workshops
This year we will have a series of family workshops that will be held at the middle school. Each session focuses on key areas that most young learners can improve in. The workshops are being run by Elevate Education. Students are encouraged to attend with their parents but not required. If you would like to attend a session please reply to the main office by phone up to the day before each session so we have an idea of attendance and space needs.

Counselor News:
Lloyd Road's anti-bullying efforts continue to be effective! A huge thank you to the staff, parents, and students for reinforcing positive behaviors in our school! This month our students will sign the No Place for Hate Promise! This will affirm each students commitment to respect and kindness, while pledging No Place for Hate. This message is embedded in our daily activities here at Lloyd Road and reinforced on a daily basis!

Parent Reminders:
- We ask that all Parents/Guardians please make sure to update any changes in phone numbers or contacts in the Parent Portal. Should you need to remove anyone from your contacts, please send a note to the Main Office, and we can remove the person for you. Unfortunately, the system does not allow you to do that on your own at this time.
- Notices are uploaded on to the Virtual Backpack periodically. Please make sure that you go in every so often to view any new flyers.
- An adult must sign in/sign out students when dropping them off late, or picking them up early. Students should not be dropped off at the door to buzz in by themselves.
- Should your child be absent for illness/death in family/emergency, please make sure to supply a note to the child's teacher so that their absence may be changed to excused. Please note that vacations do not count as an excused absence.
