First Grade News

This week in language arts we have been working on the long /u/ sound spelled as ew, ou, and oo. We are reading a story called, A Butterfly Grows by Stephen Swinburne. It explains the growth of a butterfly. Our comprehension skill is sequencing. We will complete an activity to go with our story that outlines these stages.

This week in math the children are learning to subtract double-digit numbers with and without regrouping. When your children practice at home, I recommend they use counters to help them understand how to build and break down groups of ten. Legos are a perfect tool for this concept.

God's Time

In religion, we discussed what it is like to have a close friend or family member move away. The children learned that after Jesus’ resurrection he visited his disciples several times, which made them happy. Eventually, Jesus had to go back to be with God in Heaven. We call this the Ascension. His disciples were very sad, but he promised to send them a helper called the Holy Spirit.

We have been studying plant and animal habitats in science. This week we will start our Foss unit on plants. We will begin by discussing the parts of a plant.

The first grade class hosts the reception after this celebration. Please contact the Room Mothers if you can help out! Our field trip to Northwest Trek has been scheduled for Friday, June 3. All field trip forms and money are due by Friday, May 13. The cost is $9.95 per person. I need to turn in the count in order to keep our reservation. We would love to have you join us for one or all of these events! We are presently in second place for the box top contest. Keep sending in those box tops!
